Switched Amp Day?
Swapped Amp Day?
Different Amp Day?

Oh wait !!
I know.
Traded In Amp Day
TRIAD
There we go.
8)

So, I had that huge Boogie RoadKing 412 half stack that I was never using except to demonstrate it to people who came over.
I also have my smaller Boogie .50 Caliber which I love to pieces.
I've been looking lately for opportunities to turn the RoadKing into something else that I will actually use.
I've had it on KiJiJi for about 2 months or so and yesterday I thought I had it sold.
I loaded it up into my car and headed to the city (I had errands in the city anyway) and met the guy way the heck up on the far north end.
He picked that head up just one time and said no frikken way.
Too heavy I guess.
It is heavy, I agree.... but what did he think he was getting into?
Pfft. Some people....

I had a Strat in the car too which was also for sale on KiJiJi and met another guy a little further north yet to look at it but he also didn't want my goods.
Just as well; I had mixed feelings about selling that Strat anyway.

So I took the RoadKing over to AXE.
Figured I'd trade it in on something.
What they offered was not reasonable at all.
About 30% of what they would have re-sold it for.
I had never tried to trade anything before at AXE.
Now I know and lesson learned.

Took it to L&M and it was a different story.
The guy loved the amp and offered me 80%.
All I had to do was pick something that cost at least 15% more.

As I was walking around, looking, a comment I made in another thread elsewhere in these pages a few days ago was stuck in my mind about small Boogies needing power scaling.
Then I spotted one that has it.
I have tried this one before and I remembered it sounded fantastic so I took it home.

As I was walking out something struck me as funny/peculiar.
I went in with 135 watts, 4 channels and 4 Celestions.
I came out with 100 watts, 2 channels and 3 Celestions fewer.
Clearly I gave up much more amp than I gained and I still had to pay money to do it.
Know what?
It was worth it.

I'd say in the grand scheme of things, you did pretty good, considering you got something you know you like and will use, and especially if you couldn't sell it on your own. I know what that's like, trying to sell gear sometimes.

Cool amp, too. 8)

Nice score! It is hard to get rid of heavy gear. I know a guy who actually cut down
a Hammond B3 to make it a Porta-B3. Nobody wanted the full B3 - the portable sold
in 2 days!

Thanks, guys.
Interesting story, Mike.
I've always yearned for a B3 but have been afraid of the size and heft.

Hammond is back in business again and they're selling a lightweight digital version that is supposed to be the bomb.
Pricey though.
Called the SK1 and SK2, the difference of which is one keyboard or two.
I might start praying to the lottery gods again.

Dai-umm!!

I am loving this little Boogie soooo much.
It's addictive.
My back is sore now from standing with a guitar for 3 hours.

I haven't felt the rush of GAS like this for years.
Kid with a new toy.

I guessing it took two trips into the store and only one trip when leaving.
Lighter can be better sometimes.
Enjoy the new amp.

Just one trip in.
I set it up in the parking lot and rolled it in.
The cab has castors and the sidewalk has a ramp for dollies.

I've been doing some rethinking of my gear since acquiring this little gem.

The Helix will still go with the .50 Caliber Boogie since it is basically a one channel amp; with a boost I never use.
I don't really need or want channel switching with the Helix.
The Caliber is 50 watts and has an extension cabinet so it will be for gigs ... if I ever get one.
The Mk V is 35 watts and a channel switcher so I will use a simple pedal board with it and use it for jams and as a spare for friends to use when visiting me.

I took my old pedal board and removed a bunch of stuff and installed the amp foot-switch.
The board is much simpler now.
Still the same size and everything but more basic in terms of tone options and cleaner, less crowded.
I have a tuner, a wah, a tremolo, two drive pedals and the Dimension which is similar to a chorus ... kind of.
... and the foot-switch, of course.
The clean channel is set to a very chimey BlackFace kind of sound with no breakup.
The dirty channel is set to light duty breakup and the two drive pedals can be kicked in for more grind options.

One of the more useful tone shaping tools I've discovered is the foot-switchable EQ on the amp.
The EQ slider positions are now pretty much the reverse of what the pic above depicts.
I have both channels set up for a mild mid-scoop using the bass, middle, treble and presence controls.
I have the EQ section doing the opposite and pushing mids while reducing lows and highs.
When I want to be more out front and cut through I engage the EQ with a toe tap.
No volume spike, no dramatic tonal shift, just the same sound but more in-your-face and present.
When I want to step back and blend in I turn it off.

I'm going to fabricate a custom MIDI cable and install a jack on the side of the board.
I have a computer cord style jack installed on the board for a quick connect for the power supply.
I have a board-input jack for plugging the guitar into.
I will also add a board-output jack for the cable to the amp input.
Then I will make a little snake with a power cord, MIDI cord for the foot-switch and the instrument cable to the input jack.
That should make set up and tear down at a jam quick and easy.

Image

I guess I forgot to place a red arrow at the output of the Dimension.
The uppermost arrow points to the jack I now plug my guitar into.
I normally use a 90 degree plug there so I don't unintentionally kick the cord when using the wah and put strain on the jack or cable.
The plan is to install a MIDI jack and an output jack beside the existing power jack and then fab custom cables.
A MIDI cable from the foot-switch to the MIDI jack, then plug the supplied foot-switch cable into the jack.
Same for the board output.
I will install a 1/4" jack beside the power jack and fab a patch from the Dimension out to the jack.
Create the snake and set up is a breeze.

That's a great board. It's like a Swiss Army knife. Add the Helix and it's like a Swiss Army machete. :P
Nice that you could get the amp that you want as an exchange. All too often that kind of exchange may not turn out to be available or hands on available. Lighter weight is always better IMHO.

So Boogie Woogie down the highway with that baby and enjoy, Matt.

Congrats Matt! I have always been a k.i.s.s kind of guy when it comes to gear and it has worked well over all these years. Enjoy the Boogiean!

Thanks, guys.
Now that I have the Mk V pretty much set up I have been spending some time completely redoing all my patches on the Helix for the other Boogie.
I am very glad I bought that unit.
The more I play with it the better I get at getting some really nice sounds out of it.
It's way better sounding than any other multi-box I've ever tried.
You just have to be patient and basically ignore the stock presets and start from scratch.
The learning curve is all in the terminology.
There are adjustments I didn't understand at first.
Studying the manual helps a lot.
