Hi everyone,

Am wondering if anyone else has tried this?

I own an Apple Powerbook, which came with the program 'Garage Band' as part of OS-X operating system. Garage Band is software in which you can create your own music using their software instruments and/or your own real instruments.

I have a guitar cable by Griffin which plugs my Strat directly into the 3.5mm Line In port on my computer, and using the Real Instrument settings I can play into my computer and listen through headphones. I guess you could also hook it up to external speakers, come to think of it, though just playing it through my computer's speakers is pretty quiet. Griffin do make a pre-amp which helps in this situation, but the sounds produced by laptop speakers aren't so grand anyway, and it sounds much better and clearer through decent headphones.

Basically this is awesome for me as I'm new to playing and hence am still learning, and as such don't yet own an amp. I won't, either, until I'm finally producing noises worth amplification, and having this setup means I can play and practice away to myself at home or wherever without causing untold audio torture for my poor partner!

The program comes with a whole bunch of guitar and amp profiles, plus other settings such as reverb, compression, echo, etc.; plus of course you can just have plain old unmodified to just sound 'normal' if you like. I've no idea how to yet, but in the future I can see myself having lots of fun recording my plink-a-plink songs and then adding backing drums, etc..!

Whilst I'm sure most of you already have amps, and that most amps have headphone sockets for noiseless playing, I thought this as another option to that could be interesting. This could be especially true for those of you who have talents which I lamentably still lack, and could really get great use of developing songs and music without having a whole band together to muddle through and do it with. For those on a budget too it's a great option to save a few hundred on an amp, as everyone has a computer, and those with Macs will have this software on board already.

Anyway I'm at work right now but will grab some screenshots later tonight and post them of how it looks, and show what options are there on the Real Instrument - Guitar settings. Here's more info anyway from the Apple websites.

Oh, and for the cynics, a disclaimer: I'm not an Apple or Griffin or whatever person, just an Apple owner who received her 1/4"-to-3.5mm guitar cable yesterday, and was subsequently up all night playing with this stuff!

Griffin Guitar Cable - though I'm pretty sure you could use any 1/4"-3.5mm cable instead.

I have both a Macbook and a Powermac G5, so all the recording I do is on GarageBand. It's not the most sophisticated, but it's a great program for some simple recording if nothing else is available.

I use GarageBand for all of my recordings.

I've also tried using it as an amp a few times, but I found that with my setup, for some reason, I get enough delay that it makes it hard to play comfortably.
