I was a big GnR fan in their hey day. I saw them once on the Use Your Illusion tour with Metallica. That tour was marred with either amazing or late/short/poor performances by Axel. As it turned out, I was seeing them in Seattle which -- unbeknownst to me -- was Duff's first Seattle homecoming. And Duff was working the background issues to ensure that Seattle show was AMAZING ... and it absolutely was (thanks, Duff). So then they break up (more accurately, Axel finagles the rights to the GnR name then breaks up so that he can do GnR without any of the existing band). The band stays broken up for 22 years with false starts of Axel's version of GnR trying to tour and releasing only a single album ("Chinese Democracy", which was actually fairly decent). Then they re-unite in 2016 (just Axel, Slash and Duff). The two drummers during the original time (Steve Adler and Matt Sorum) and the rhythm guitar players (Izzy Stradlin and Gilby Clark) are nowhere to be found. Instead they utilize "a combination of old and new GnR members" ... which translates to me like "we can make much money more dividing by three than five".

Bottom line
:
1) For me, I especially miss having Gilby Clark in there (Izzy would have been great too). That is a hard pill to swallow.
2) Slash's playing is up to snuff as he always is good. I know he polarizes the guitar community, but I always appreciated him as a soulful Les Paul player.
3) Axel can still sing, but he has clearly lost a lot of what he had. My guess is that he knows this, and is trying to cash in with a "reunited GnR" money grab while his voice is still at least decent. My guess is they complete this two-year stadium tour, record/release an album in 2018, and then do a follow-up two-year stadium "farewell tour". The bank accounts will be well topped off at that point ... again, only dividing by three.
4) Without Axel in top form and no Izzy/Gilby, I am going to pass. I was lucky enough to see them on one of their better gigs back in the day, and that is good enough for me personally. But I get why the GnR fans are selling them out every night. Just like I always went to see Rush in these last years knowing Geddy's voice may be a little "off" at times, GnR fans need to expect the same from Axel ... and that is okay. In the end, they are back, and playing the songs the fans have missed so much.

Expounding a bit on "Chinese Democracy" a bit ... I am not defending it as if it were great. But an honest "fair listen" does not yield the worst rock album ever made as the droves were so quick to certify en masse. In light of the HUGE anticipation for this album, it definitely fell flat especially compared with previous GnR material. The same is also true for Van Halen III (a whole other topic, I realize) which is actually a "very good" album (much better than "Chinese Democracy" for sure), but also seemed to be dismissed due to a mountain of bad reviews instead of actual individual listener opinions ... which is an individual opinion of mine that I am sure I will be frosted for, as well...

I saw G'n'R with Metallica at one of the good shows during the '92 tour in Buffalo. Looking forward to seeing them again this summer 25(!) years later. Not exactly expecting to be blown away like I was a quarter-century ago but I think it will be fun. Never thought I'd see Slash and Axl perform together again.

Having the privelege of seeing their 'Not in this Lifetime' show earlier this year, and being an old school gunners fan, I was very impressed. Taking your post into consideration, here's my take.

Being mature musicians now they're clean, they're not angry and they are playing better than they ever have. Axl didn't delaying the show which surprised me greatly, but I'm guessing that he would have learnt a lot from the AC/DC boys as Angus wouldn't have tolerated that behaviour.

Izzy doesn't want to be a part of the new line-up and hey- I guess that's his decision and as A diehard I'll respect that. Gilby on the other hand was just a 'temporary' and he knew that. Looking back on a guest appearance with Steel Panther, they egged him on to play Sweet Child Of Mine at one of their shows. They were pretty shocked (and me too!) that he didn't even know the intro lead part to that song, where Satchel gave him a funny look and took over. Leaving a humbled Gilby to strum the rhythm.

As for the Steven Adler & Matt Sorum, neither will get anything more than guest appearances. The current drummer, (excluding Axl & Dizzy) is one of the longest serving members of Guns n Roses. I'd love to see Matt Sorum play with GnR like everyone else, but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon. And even if it does- I think Matt burnt some bridges with Axl long ago.. But who knows what could happen?

Here's the thing however. This is Guns n Roses. They're playing better than they ever have been. Slash is back in his element and the grin he has while he's playing shows. The rhythm guitarist has got some chops that really compliments Slash. Axl's voice has matured not in a bad way at all.. but seriously that guy can sing.. Duff's playing is top notch..

I seriously urge you to get yourself a ticket. I can guarantee you that you'll be thankful you did. I took my wife to see AC/DC (with Brian singing) and not being a fan at all, she loved the show. When she saw gunners she thought hands down, they put on a far better show than AC/DC. Considering the level that AC/DC put on, I hope that paints a picture. It will probably be one of the best shows you'll see in your lifetime.

I also hear that there's talks of a new album? That'd be cool.

You provided significant food for thought along with some really good info. Great post. As the GnR fan you obviously are, what are your thoughts on "Chinese Democracy"? I already posed mine; I'd be curious to know yours...

I'm not a GnR fan, but I get those that are.

I think 01GT eibach made a great observation and comment as to whether the performance has worth with vocalists in and out of their prime.

Like many here, I've worked with vocalists that are beginners, seasoned, improved, and failing. We all know age is not always the deciding factor. Longevity is a gift.

That being said I believe that there is a time to hang up the mike, and sometimes it is in the beginning as well as the end of one's career.

There is one other scenario often overlooked, however. Sometimes, a performer is great and, although he or she may not be as great anymore, they can be not only good, but very good, and then there's good. In fact, even though others may be better, others are sure to be worse. Think Presley. Arguments can be said for and against his storied career. Great in the beginning, improved, not as good but decent, tragic. Any Elvis impersonator before Elvis burnt out would not have filled the spot for fans. It was not just the prime of Elvis and his best ever music that fans came for - it was the entertainer - the man! History shows this to be the case elsewhere.

Under the right circumstances, 01GT eibach has hit the nail on the head and some consideration is warranted accordingly. IMHO.
