Hi all,
I own a 1995 Fender Stratocaster 'Squire Series' guitar. I'm curious about the origins of this guitar. I've been reading all sorts of information on the internet from different forums but nothing is conclusive to me. Things like the body and neck are original U.S. standard Stratocaster supplied to the Mexico factory from the over stocked U.S. factory and the electrics are from Asia. And that they were only made from 1993 - 1998. Can anyone please give me any info on these guitars ?

Welcome to the Forum mark1969. I have a Squier series Precision bass. Made in Mexico. The best sounding bass I have played. There are many guitar gurus here perhaps one of them will have an answer for you. 8)

Hello, welcome aboard!

Over the years Fender has tried producing guitars overseas, mostly cheaper lines, meant to be budget, but good instruments.

These strats, basses and acoustics which have the "Squier Series" (even thoug they do have the Fender logo on the headstock) started being made in the early 90s (give or take a couple of semesters), in Mexico and in Brazil.

The Mexican ones have black or metallic gray "Fender" decals and the "Squier Series" on the tip of the headstock, whereas the Brazilian ones have only the metallic gray. They are actually pretty different instruments.

MiM Squier Series were made in Fender owned facilities, and aren't too different from an ordinary standard MiM Strat.

The Brazilian made ones were made of one piece cedar bodies and pau marfim (a variety of Brazilian maple-like tonewood) necks by a 100 years old guitar company, Giannini, under license, and inspected by Fender employees. The series began in 1993 and was discontinnued around Dec1995, due to high labor cost and quality control issues.

In Brazil the series was soon renamed "Southern Cross Series".

I own one of these Brazilian ones, mine was made in 1994. Here's a pic:

Played my first gig with it, and though it's nowhere near as good as my US strat, I don't plan on parting with it. They weren't made for export, and though I wouldn't go so far as to call them collectible, they are definitely oddballs.
