I like Guitar Center. You need to learn how to shop there, but after that's done, you've got a good resource.

Can't say I have a problem with the GC I deal with. The salesfolk I've dealt with are working musicians, so they have a clue about what they're selling. There are a few other local shops, but their collection doesn't seem to be as complete; Dave Phillips doesn't seem to carry Epiphone, Guitar Villa has a limited supply of acoustics, etc. Pricing doesn't seem to vary much from store to store, though I'll admit I've never compared online to brick-and-mortar prices. I'll have to start checking that.

I think at least they are better than Sam Ash. I did buy my '08 usa strat Ash sunburst at GC and they were supposed to charge an extra $100 for "special wood" and they did not.

I've been to that GC a couple times, it's where I bought my MIM Strat. Most recently I went in early Saturday and had every single question about an amp I'm thinking about getting answered and left me very happy.

JBond, you're absolutely right, the local stores don't have much in the way of variety, which is a shame b/c Dave Philips in Phillipsburg does great set ups.

Guitar Center can't bargain anymore, apparently. I haven't asked my friend who works there, but I've been told by others that they're under new ownership and they've done away with that practice. All they'll do now is price-matching.

GC was sold last year to Bain Captital they also own AMC Entertainment, Domino'sPizza,Sealy, Burger King, Toys R Us, Sports Authority, Musicians Friend, American Music Group, Music and Art Center and Warner Music. And for many who have not heard of Bain Capital it was started in 1984 and one of the main founders is Mitt Romney Governor of Mass. The sale last year was handled by Goldman sachs for Bain.

You're going to get little to nothing when you trade anything in. In order for them to be able to sell the equipment for a reasonable market price, they have to be able to buy it for less.

Eliminating the middle man is the best way to sell used equipment.

Dave Phillips...that's a name from the past. I used to pester the Allentown stores for hours on end playing the PBass Lyte and plugging it to the M80 amp back in college

Then I found out I can go over the bridge to Jersey and only pay 3% sales tax in P'burg...while all the sales tax in NJ is 7%. I bought my 1st accoustic bass there.

As far as GC goes, only if my local store can't get me the stuff would I go there. I'd wait before I'd go to GC.

The only thing Guitar Center is good for now is Lowballing customers who walk in their stores. If you go in there with used merchandise exoecting a fair trade, forget it.They don't even use the Blue Book anymore. Now they look on E-Bay for the lowest price and they actually condone that sort of practice.

Not aimed at you jeffo46, but you post got me thinking.

The same thing happens when you try to trade in you car. You know you can get more by selling it out-right but you take it in for a trade-in. It's called laziness. You don't want that hassle. The same thing applies to guitars. Sellers beware. You know you're gonna get screwed, but you take it in anyway. And with the rise of the internet, it is very easy to see what people are paying for things, no matter what it is. I have never payed anywhere near full price on any of my new equipment. A little research is all I did. And I have a knack for spewing some serious bs knowledge. Speaking of GC, I know more about basses and bass equipment than most of the "bass" people that work at my local store. There are exceptions. JMO
