That's a good point. It does cost money to run a website.

People use these sites as their sole source for storing their pictures??

Apparently, or it wouldn't be much of a "ransom"?

I always thought of it as a temporary photo posting site.

Guess it's time to change...

The problem at hand isn't disappearing pics per se.
The previous "free" PB account allowed people embed pics to other websites, like these forums (3rd party hosting).
The new and improved terms of use don't allow 3rd party hosting below the "Plus500 clients" level, yearly charge 399,99$...

I fully agree with their service... free to do what they like . And it's the user's prerogative to not accept the terms & go elsewhere.

Maybe someday soon the airlines follow the policy, and we get a free flight to the Bahamas (free as in funded by ads). But then they tell us it's 399,99 to get out of the plane.

You haven't heard of Norwegian Airlines and Ryanair then?
Extremely cheap tickets, like Norwegian's $65 for transatlantic flights. Plus airport fees and taxes. And the return ticket is three times as much, which is still cheap. Except if you need to book a seat, because you aren't a sprinter who can run to the plane faster than others to get one of the "free" seats. Or if you need to check in anything. Or store a second piece of carry-on in an overhead compartment. Or you want to eat or drink anything on a 6-8 hour flight. In reality, most end up paying hundreds. And the flight still might get cancelled if they don't get enough high payers, leaving you with no choice but paying full price with another airline to get where you need to go in time.

Then there are those that ignore or tire of the tedious rules and EULA. Not only is it easy to click "I agree" without considering the consequences, features, or lack of, making that click is often encouraged to speed the process. It's like signing for your first new car. All shiney at first until you discover the true cost of that sheet metal. Hey! I'm going out on a limb when I say, "We've all been there".

Those tedious lawyer scripts called EULAs are now being read aloud by text to speech making my job less cumbersome.

Unfortunately, my decisions for picking software are often a compromise that I'm willing to take as opposed to making regrets for a lazy or uncalculated mistake. Sometimes, I goof up; however, that makes life interesting. :P
Ironically, signing up for a service or App could be both a good decision or a bad decision depending how it affects you. YMMV.

Hopefully, there's not a big crash and burn here, Lizards. Hopefully, the casualties will be small and the damages minimal.

For those who haven't signed up for Fender's Forum - don't pass up a good thing. 556, 549 and counting present members and many who have left us will testify to that. :D
Cheers!

photobucket seem like it still works for me I only use it when I want to post something on this forum only. So the minute they ask for money I will be history as I keep my photos I want on my own storage hard drives,

I saw this thread and decided to look at my old posts from when I was gratz. Almost all the old photos are gone. I have backups for all of it but there was some good stuff there for the enjoyment of others. Oh well.

Sorry, to hear that. pgratzb. Good to know you have backups.

Thankfully, I didn't put one particular vendor on my bucket list.

That's a RPITA to say the least, Rolly. Hope you have backups.

This reminds me of a song:

I just poured a very tall Vodka & Tonic, hooked up a 2TB external drive, and after about 90 min. and several hundred mouse clicks later, I reclaimed EVERYTHING from photobucket !!

Tmw., I'll pour an equally tall Vodka & Tonic, open an acct. at Imgur.com, invest 90 min. and several hundred more mouse clicks and upload everything there.

Then, next week when Mrs. LMN is in NYC for P Cup meetings, I'll do a search here by screename, filter all my posts w/ images, and replace all the third party links to reset all my images from the banner

Image

That will of course take longer than 90 min., likely several hundred more mouse clicks and certainly several more equally tall Vodka & Tonics but it'll be like it never happened (except of course for the Detox).

Then I'm gonna email PB and tell them to close my acct. w/ the accompanying banner I hi-jacked here:

Easy-Peasy !!!!

cheers!
