If you have been using Photobucket to post pictures in the Fender Lounge over past years, please note that Photobucket has ruined all of your previous posts which contained Photobucket uploaded pictures, by their extortion scheme to require a payment of $400 ransom for Photobucket to recall it's ransomware, which has replaced all of your pictures in the Fender Lounge, and on other message boards, with the following:

Image
Within the past year, I switched to the "Imgur.com" free picture service, which is much more user friendly and superior free photo hosting service, compared to Photobucket, which is now, no longer free for 3rd party message board hosting.
My response to this Photobucket ransomware, $400 extortion demand, which has ruined several years worth of Fender Lounge and other Forum posts, of mine and others, is as follows:

I recommend that all "Lounge Lizards" go to the Photobucket Facebook page and register your complaint regarding Photobucket's unacceptable retroactive extortion, which violates the terms of usage under which your past photos were uploaded to Photobucket and posted in this and other Forums.

+1

It's absolutely obnoxious at this point.

Ditto
I think they get hacked aaaaaaaaLOT, causing casual users a real PITA experience.
It could be self inflicted adware bugs.

EDIT: I finally got the email and then the Photo Bomb. Trying to resurrect my post pics, as to not allow the free ad for photobucket. Deleted my 10+ year old account and all my pics from there site.

I've been using imgur for a few years now, with almost no problems. The pics in imgur use less characters also. I closed out of PhotoBucket.

I left all my stuff on Photobucket to keep old posts working but for the past year or so I've been using Flickr.
It's faster loading, faster hot linking and way fewer ads.
I may close the PB account soon.

Speaking of Ransomware, don't be a fool, run your Windows updates regularly. The last 2 threats were patched quickly but people who don't run this patches risk losing data!

Also, back up your files regularly. If you have your files backed up and get hit with ransomware, you can tell them to go scratch.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma with Photobucket, MickJagger.

It took me a little while and a lot of reading to choose a photo service as discussed here. I knew Photobucket was popular on the Forum and elsewhere but, luckily, I declined to bite.

At this time, after finding a lot to be desired with most of the popular services, I use a camera manufacturer's simpler service. It's not a Cadillac, but it gets me there. Whether I use it over the longhaul depends on my needs and cost, and I suppose their service and policy. I do find it stable and the quality is there. Editing is done with my other installed software.

I think that all too often, except when file size issues are considered, or remote storage and transfers are warranted, too much is dependent on the Cloud and services that hold our files.

In a highly technical broadcast station with oodles of files we backed up most everything even with data tape! At home I never upload my cherished files audio or video unless I have a hard copy or original (as I'm sure others have). With any luck, and extra work and frustration, those photos can usually be replaced. Even here on the Forum.
Losing a service will happen again and again in the future, and as the Net changes so will the cost to do business. Amongst the features, hacking and security expenses are tragically shared by all. Hence the ads that we love to hate and appreciate. Besides, that commercialism has been around since personal computers have existed. It's just some services are better or worse than others. When the ads stop - Look out!

It doesn't make the loss of media any easier to swallow except to say buyer beware, and back up, back up, back up or set yourself up to provide that media service.

Me? I'll do like the rest and depend on others - only I don't expect paradise. It doesn't, unfortunately exist.
FSB

YMMV

I don't keep all my money in one bank, it could help to use a similar approach with your media service. That way if your Forum photos get lost you'll only have some to replace.

For once, I agree with Mick. Photobucket has already lost any usability they previously had; many forum posts have an external link - which on today's Photobucket leads to a pop-up hell. This latest "upgrade" kills the site for me totally.
Disapprove. Resent. Boycot. Mayhem.

At the moment: Imgur, OK. Flickr, OK. Googlephotos, OK, usually. There are many more.
Of course, one solution would be if Fender would have a pic hosting system inside the forum...

Don't have a FB account. Never say never, but I never will...

I've never used this, but as far as pop up ads are concerned, I'd recommend using some sort of ad blocker to deal with that. That can often help with that sort of thing.

Nope. I just prefer to avoid Photobucket and such sites where advertizing takes control over the original purpose. On PB, the ads are not only annoying, they're on the verge of malware. Here's an adventure with that cursed site a couple weeks ago:
Quote:
Photobucket journey this time:
a Unibet pop-up,
then a 'print your photos' ad bar needing to be closed,
one "edge by udm" pop-up corner window,
then a qudsurvey pop-up,
then a "sponsored ads - continue to site" overlay pop-up,
then an "exception" error ad bar,
then, finally to the pics.

Not many visits to the site from me since that...

Ads are what gives us those "free image hosting websites", so I don't mind every ad (or even every pop-up) on every page. But, I feel there is a limit to greed...

It's their service, and they're free to do what they like within the terms you accepted. Including changing the terms. You should have read the fine print before relying on a free service. Nobody forced you to hand them a copy of your pictures and not keep copies. This has nothing to do with ransomware, and all to do with reducing the cost of freeloaders.
If they don't survive as a business, they're not going to serve your pictures either.
