Thanks, for the memories, Art.

Funny how those days mean different things to everyone. America had Vietnam, Canada received draft dodgers, I had finished school in 1966 in the land of BC Bud and magic mushrooms, Washington state soldiers and sailors walked the streets of my home town on their way overseas, and I had previously joined the Naval Reserve earlier not knowing how things would evolve.

As it happened, I found myself for a short stopover in April of '67 after sailing from Panama. Here I was in uniform surrounded by polite but inquisitive flower children. We never judged each other. Well, some suspicious characters hung on. We just said, "High!". Hours earlier, I had been rubbing shoulders with some great American servicemen on Treasure Island. Now it was Golden Gate Park just a stone's throw from Haight Ashbury in 'Frisco. Protest signs were everywhere, but it was before the masses moved in. Drugs were everywhere, and we certainly had offers. There was definitely peace and love in the air and the wiff of grass in the park. I can only guess the end result once everyone gathered in that Summer of Love.

Days later, I returned to where I had grown up, but I lived in another province so once again I missed out on the tune in trip out festivities and, of course, all that love.

I found this not to promote or deny. You might find the following article interesting. It shows how wide spread the movement was. That fad hasn't traveled far from those days as protests and drug legalization makes it's way in today's world. Keep your eyes wide open and you may still see a flower power van pass by. If you don't, I'll point you in the right direction. :D

Wonderful story, FSB.

My memories from Victoria are later, but still good, including horse drawn carriages, a visit to an enormous flower park, and the most beautiful woman in the world at the time leaving a rose on the pillow in the morning.

The flower power movement is still alive. After Trump took office, one old lady I know sent flowers to Pennsylvania Ave., "Mr. President, for your hair". That may be a lost battle, but the sentiment is there.

I heard that VW is going to come out with a new VW Bus, about the size and shape as the old one, but modern.

Will it be optioned with contact paper over the windows, a roach clip hanging from the rearview mirror, and a Deadhead bumpersticker?

Nice that you could visit there, Art. Just last year Victoria was named the most romantic city in Canada, and it looks like it worked for you. :D Fantastic Hippie bakeries are very popular on and around Victoria, and here's a secret (the horses are from stateside or at least they were at one time). I was there for a visit last year and I didn't recognize any of the horses. The flower park was likely Butchart Gardens known world wide. Speaking of flowers and dope, poppies once grew everywhere until they were found with tops cut off for Chinatown and elsewhere. Today, poppies are regulated and hard to find. Easier to find hippies. :D
There were plans for a Canadian Disneyland up the Gorge waterway, but city fathers turned it down as I left high school. Some of my school chums hoped for Disney jobs while others applied for hippie life on the islands.

Cool Trump story about the flowers. I'll bet he was excited. If VW does a bus again it'll sell, but only if it doesn't burn like the old ones. Gotta luv them though. For those not familiar with Victoria . . . it's a little like England, weather wise, and culturally. Not as much as it was though. It's reported there are more vintage English sports cars in the area than in the UK. I don't know about that, but it had been said in England they were not kept anymore than a normal car until the value was seen.

Incidentally, Lennon's flower power Rolls was downtown in a Victoria museum until recently. Mrs. FSB's girlfriend did a bridal ad in front of the car.

Cheers!
Great topic, Art.
Enjoy this summer.

You provide your own decoration. Except for the levitating guru gnome on the dashboard.

If the bus (or buzz as they call it) comes in other colors than Ripe Bile, it might not be a bad second car, being electric and having sleeper seats and a table in the back. A different type of joyride than the BMW, for sure, but I could see myself going to an outdoor event in one of those, bringing a guitar.

But only if it comes with the guru gnome.
Namaste!

I hope it's got more get-up-and-go than my old '66 with its pathetic 1600 four-cylinder. Loaded with a drum set, our PA, and a couple of Super Reverb's, the poor thing couldn't get out of it own way.

I know politics are generally a no-no here in the Forum. I can understand and pretty much agree. It's all messed up anyhow IMHO.

But, I think the picture that strings10927 gave us deserves a factoid:

Protests in 1967 were directed at a Democratic government that held power from 1963 (Kennedy) to 1969 (LBJ).

Some have said those days are back with drugs, protests, fashion, and music amongst other things.

Maybe. But. many who were there in 1967, including Jane Fonda and a slew of vocalizing crowd gathering entertainers, have somehow changed hats and joined the very establishment they rebelled against. The other guys on Capital Hill are the ones on the hit list now.

Crazy times and interesting history. Signs, signs, everywhere are signs, and they read alike. I wonder if any old hippies simply bring out their old signs from back then. Makes me think of the Temptations' lyric "Ball of Confusion" - and the band played on.
Peace.

Yeah......they lash them to their wheelchairs and their walkers. Those who still have hair wear it long like the unkempt miscreants they always were and their recreational drugs of choice are now Rogaine and Viagra.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Are you sure you're not just jealous that old hippies still (a) have hair, and (b) get some...
