I found a beat up, modified telecaster in my basement. Someone modified it with a humbucker in the neck position, then finished it with a poor paint job. I am trying to restore it to more of a traditional tele with some modifications. This is the first time I have worked with a guitar with a modified binding on the neck, and I ran into a big problem. I used Citristrip to remove paint and polyurethane. The binding was added after the poly. Unfortunately, Citristrip melts binding better than it removes poly. Any advice on how to remove binding once it has been melted?

I have scraped off melted spots, but a lot of ugliness remains.

I can't think of any chemical that will dissolve melamine (which the binding most likely is) and not harm wood, so make sure you haven't caused wood damage too, including local bloating/discoloration or dried out wood. If there is damage, soak it with mineral oil, and clamp it before attempting repairs.

That said, to the remove the binding remnants, I'd use a chisel or miniature shoulder plane[*]. Take your time. Try not to use sandpaper, or you risk rounding the edges and have to mess with fillers.

[*]: Veritas sells a miniature shoulder plane that was originally meant as a collectible, but it's fully functional and has become popular with luthiers for cleaning out nut slots and shoulders for bindings. And at $40, it's about the same price as a decent chisel. Highly recommended.

Pictures also take up more bandwidth than a thousand words, making it a bad trade.
On the other hand, few people are capable of writing or reading a thousand words these days.

Almost! The fastest internet without port blocking available where I live is 768 kbps DSL. The phone company won't even sell me a T1, because that means replacing their cables that appear to hail back to Alexander Graham Bell's days...

So much for the two billion in subsidies that the providers got for making broadband available to the public...

No wireless ISP companies in your area?

Nope, unfortunately.
Got the choice between cable modem with extensive port blocking and content rewriting, or ADSL. In other words, ADSL it is.

I still like living where I get bears and fisher cats walking through the driveway, have my own little forest, and I actually know the name of my neighbors. I have lived in big cities, and must say country life is more agreeable to me. I'm the old guy sitting on the porch either playing my guitar or whittling :)

I'm with you there. But a modicum of civilization such as wireless internet wouldn't necessarily be an interloper......

I'm bumping this up because... well... (no good excuse came to mind) I'm curious.
I mean, outside the 'channel bounds' and an occasional FSR (Thinline Super Deluxe), what other made-by-Fender Telecasters have a bound neck? Especially the likes one would dump in the basement..?

BTW, the binding could just as well be some sort of vinyl, unless the guitar is old enough to have celluloid.

BDrew, any chance of a follow-up?

If you intend to just clean up the binding the following may or may not apply.

Most of the videos out there show body binding removal. The process is the same, however.

Using heat is risky but setting to the lowest heat level with care (and maybe a dry towel or such for a protected area may help) should do the trick; however, I would try the following using heat as a last choice.

The two methods are pretty much the same and very often are popular methods of removal. You'll probably want to use painters tape to protect areas of concern when working (but not with any heat as the tape's glue will react). I have a heat gun and some have used that. I wouldn't do it for fear that the heated air could accidentally loosen up glue, finish, plastics or other in an area I don't want. As arth1 stated damage to the neck wood from prior work or even with adding heat is always possible. KISS is probably your best choice.

At your own risk (don't cut yourself)

Good luck.
