A couple of months ago, I had posted about how all of my acoustics had gotten stolen from a so called friend. I didn't leave the posting on here long because I didn't want to bother any of you with my personal problems. Unfortunately, I never got any of them back because I never had the insight to copy down serial numbers of any of them. I contacted this organization called " Guitars for Veterans " and they were very gracious to donate to me, a 1996 made in Indonesia, Fender DG-5 which is unlike any I've ever seen before . The previous owner had some sort of dowel installed under the bridge which gives it more sustain and tone and it also has a very sweet, satin finish. I did install a new set of Fender Saddle pins and have it strung with Elixirs 11 gauge. I'm still doing the Acoustic thing but from now on, it's just going to be and nobody else. I do plan on getting a new Taylor Big Baby very soon and that will definately be it.

Sorry to hear about your instruments getting stolen, but I'm glad you're now able to enjoy playing again. I'd never heard of Guitars for Veterans, but helping vets while promoting music is definitely a great cause.

And thank you for the post -- I'll be copying down the serial numbers on my guitars this evening.

Sorry to hear about your guitars getting ripped off. With friends like that, who needs enemies!?! The last thing I remember you posting was actually getting a new guitar, so I'm assuming that was stolen, as well. Were they stolen from your house? Well, at least you were able to be helped out with getting another one that you can play.

Sorry to hear about your stolen guitars. Thieves suck.

A friend had a nice guitar stolen while gigging at Chan's (your area).

Paul F. What happened was , I was in a Acoustic duo with somebody who didn't have any gear but had a practice space much larger than mine. Being the generous fellow that I was , I had bought all of my acoustics to his place so that we could use them for the duo. Rather than lug them back and forth all of the time , we both agreed that it would be okay to leave them there. To make this short, one night he called me and said that somebody broke into his home and stole all of them which sounded fishy to me. I asked him if he had called the police to which he said no, so I did and he told them that those were the only items that were stolen. I also asked the police if there were any signs of forced entry at his place to which they said, they couldn't find any. Because they couldn't find any evidence of the guitars at his place, no arrests were made so it was a case of my word against his. So now, I will not be lending gear to anyone anymore !!!!

Well that totally SUCKS, but glad you received some sort of replacement to keep you playing until you get the one you will cherish, A while back there was a post about this Guitars for Veterans and it seems like a very good program, if I am not mistaken the post was about sending your unwanted guitar to them, I can't think of a better program, I am happy it worked out for you

It's a sad day when you learn the friendship you thought you had never really existed.
Been there a couple times.
Glad you're on the growing/learning/recovery path.
Enjoy the freebie and swing by more often.

I wonder if the person was on drugs or not and pawned them to support their habit? The fact they didn't even have their own gear might lead to that conclusion, as well. I'm only saying this because I've known quite a few people like that over the years. Unfortunately, it is often a bad idea to leave your gear anywhere where you're not staying, and I highly recommend anyone not to do so. You never know what could happen and you could wind up getting screwed.

Sorry to hear that you had your beloved babies stolen,I realize that you must be gutted. I had a $75 Raven acoustic that I bought for camping etc. that got stolen while were away from the house during a move and that was devastating to me,strangely enough there was a very rare '63 Hagstrom Corvette right across from it and they left that alone (it cost $750 when the original owner bought it in Sweden in 1963).I've heard a lot of good about Guitars For Vets, they also
supply guitars to vets largely for the proven therapeutic effect that music has on the psyche and it has been recognized as being a beneficial tool in the healing process of vets suffering from PTSD and physical injuries as well,God Bless them for that!!!

With regard to recording serial numbers, that is the best thing that you can do to track down stolen guitars.Vintage Guitar Magazine actually provides a free service to guitarists and will publish all the serial numbers of instruments that people have had stolen from them. When I buy a new guitar I take front and back photos of it (since no 2 guitars have the same woodgrain patterns a photo of the woodgrain would positively identify your guitar even if all the serial numbers etc. were removed) and write down the model number and serial number.I often remove the back plate covering the electronics and inconspicuously make an identifiable mark inside the body-just in case they try to alter or remove the serial number.

I have learned a huge lesson from this experience for sure. I now have the serial number from the DG-5 I recieved, jotted down and, I will never , lend out gear to anyone anymore. I don't care who it is !!!! This cat is now completely a solo act !

that sucks, I lost a bunch of gear in a similar way. A singer I used to work with stored a lot of our band equipment, but some of it was mine which I was letting the band use. Anyway, band breaks up after a few years and he basically wouldn't agree to meet me anywhere to get my gear back. Sucks, but lesson learned.

As a former Big Baby owner I encourage you to look at a 110 or something else in the lower parts of the Taylor range.

There's always excitement and joy when you first get a new guitar but after that wears off I think you'll be sorry you went that route and will be back on the GAS path again, looking to upgrade.

I realize you might be on the less-is-more wagon right now but sometimes less is just less.

The Big Baby falls falls under the latter, IMO.

I feel sorry for the thief his karma will suck for life. I know what its like getting ripped off. And nothing good ever happens for you when stealing from others is the answer to acquiring what you want. One day he will cross the line with the wrong person.

This looks like a good place to hand out another story so that you don't lose your gear to unscrupulous characters.

Early on, my 24/7 job demanded more of me and my few years old drum set was going to basically sit idle. I decided to cash in, put them on consignment at a well known music store, and buy new ones when and if the situation changed. BIG Mistake!

One of the guys at work came in for a shift change and alerted me the store was going belly up and by the time I got there my cherished unavailable snare from England and classic heavy Zildjians were missing. Excuses flew about bankruptcy and not knowing where they were.

Long story short, a secretary at work called her lawyer brother who freely wrote a letter, and, sight unseen, the owner opened it with shock and surprise, and without me ever having read the letter, he reluctantly told me to grab my gear and to choose from the remaining cymbals, and a comparable snare. Problem was that there was little in the store to choose from. The snare was okay, but not equal, the cymbals sucked, and since then the missing originals have more than tripled in value even in a used state. Not a happy camper.

So, before you leave your gear, check the situation closely. I'm even gun shy with leaving the guitars for service at a well respected store, whether at an independent or a chain establishment. The less time there, the better the odds. IMHO. We all know of a well known chain that has been rumoured to be close to the chopping block for years and I feel for the struggling independent stores. It may be the one you don't know about that does you in.

I have had two unpleasant experiences with a consignment deal.
I didn't lose my items like FSB (that really sucks) but it still ended up being a pointless endeavour.
In both cases, I left the items with the retailer with the understanding that I wanted $X for my item and they could sell it for whatever profit they figured was good for them.
They agreed to my asking price and both times I went off to a job out of town only to come back and find they had priced my item so high that they would never sell.
They were using my item as an example of how much resale value there was and suggested the buyer go for a new one instead, since the price difference wasn't that much.
The retailers had no investment tied up in my pieces and all they cost them was a little showroom floor space.
Needless to say I collected my belongings and will never do business with those retailers again.
I also will never go the consignment route again.
Fool me once, fool me twice, etc.
