I have a friend who insists there was a Fender guitar factory on the east coast, specifically, New Jersey. This was supposed to be in the 60's - 70's.

He has a Telecaster that he claims was given to him in 1972 by an employee with the last name of Destefano. (Sp?) Not sure of his first name.

Might anyone have any information regarding this? Was there ever a Fender factory on the east coast?

I will make a separate post with a few pictures of the guitar shortly.

Thanks...

All Fender guitar and amp production during the '60s and '70s was performed at the Fullerton plant in California. Your friend is mistaken.

Don't argue with your friend.
Agree with him and just nod your head "yes" whenever he talks about it.
Then find a way to just sort of casually change the subject and tell him (with a straight face, of course) Ford builds their flagship SUV, the Lincoln Navigator on the dark side of the moon and that's why so many people rave about how they have so much space in them.
Then just stare at him expressionless and wait.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Danelectro and Kramer guitars were originally made in Neptune, New Jersey, so perhaps there was a confusion with either of those?

Thanks for the replies. Even the Fender folks confirmed there were no manufacturing plants on the east coast.

My friend has had a sort of stroke thing where he was in a coma for lack of oxygen to the brain. He was given this Tele back in 1972 by some friend or acquaintance. It has rarely been played because my friend (Bobby) does not play at all. I met him several weeks ago after many years. In fact the last time we saw each other, I was on life support after a motorcycle accident left me paralyzed back in 1988.

After these years, Bobby moved about two hours away from me. When I went to visit, he pulled out this untouched 1971 double bound sunburst Tele with a one piece maple neck. I wish I could post some pictures of it. It is quite a closet queen in its original Fender case.

I think my friend is confusing a Fender dealer with the Fender factory.

The double-bound body makes it a Telecaster Custom. Very cool guitar!

True for electrics, but American made Fender acoustics were made in New Hartford, Connecticut for a while, before they closed it and moved all production overseas.

That travesty saved FMIC enough money that they were able to pay the lease on Bono's brand-new Tesla.

Great clarification, arth1. The video is very informative. Lots of videos are, no doubt, similar and this one has some good Q&A by the individuals involved.

Thanks.

After spending a lot of time looking close up at all the Teslas in Van, I'd rather plug in a Fender. Maybe they just need a change of pedals. Good plug though, Arjay. 8) YMMV

Fender also made acoustics in Spring Hill Tennessee for a few years and where quite good guitars, but last time I checked a map, Tennessee is Not on the east coast...
