I was in a quite lengthy discussion with a co-worker on what sounds better... vinyl or cd, analog or digital, ect. I'm of the mind that vinyl sounds better. For some reason, the scratching between the stylus and the record itself made it much more tangible to me. A lot of this newer digital recording sounds so sterile. There are exceptions, though. Any thoughts?

I'll save mono vs stereo for another thread on another day.

I actually like digital better. I like the clean sound with no interference. I prefer to hear pure sound.

I grew up on vinyl. I remember always having to use some type of cleaning kit with fluids and brushes, just to get all the dust off, to make it more pure sound, without all the clicking, etc. And.......if you really played the vinyl a lot.......you'd eventually wear out the record. CD's last a lot longer.

I grew up in a vinyl world too. There was a certain warmth to vinyl that CD's don't have. Then again, that warmth was a lack of high end that CD's do have. I remember the first time I listened to Yes: Close to the Edge on CD. I heard things I had never heard before. Based on that I'd have to say CD's are a more accurate representation of a recording.

CDs maybe be technically purer, but I love the sound of vinyl; you have to get involved with those big 12" discs...I still listen to them, bought a bunch of rare Zeppelin bootlegs and others at a garage sale recently, and bands are starting to release on vinyl again...sales went from 850,00 in 2006 to 1.3 or 1.4 million in 2007; turntable sales are also up, not just due to DJs.[/u]

I like all the format's for different reasons I collect vinyl though for the clicks and pops and analog feel as well as the cover art. And as said many artist are doing vinyl again. Many are now 180 gram which is virgin vinyl and is supposed to hold up better and have less pop and cracks on them but I often to find it is hard to tell.

Sound quality aside, I miss the ritual of the vinyl album. Cleaning the record and the stylus, setting the stylus down without a *thunk*, turning over the album halfway through... It was almost a religious experience.

And I miss the big, beautiful covers of the 12-inch albums. We had a thread yesterday on the topic of album covers, and I nominated ELO's "Out of the Blue" as my favorite cover. With its huge gatefold cover and the fascinating paintings on both the inner and outer cover, I could study that thing for hours.

Those are good points. I also miss the turning the record over. That and scanning large artwork made it all have the feeling that it was an event you were invested in.

Also the way songs would be listed on them with the names of who did what for each song and you did not need a magnifying glass to read them and don't forgat the cool sleeves on many. Like I said on one post Alice Cooper used panties as a sleeve on the album. Or the album cover of E.Plurbus cover of Grand Funk that was round and had there three face on the cover like a coin. They put thought into every aspect of these vinyl's

I am a vinyl lover too, however they wont fit in my cd player in my truck and so I have to have both.

I have SRV the sky is crying both ways, the Vinyl blows the Cd away for sound quality. if you ever get a chance to hear Little Wing on vinyl and a good audio system, see for your self.

Hello Liveatsix

I still listen to vinyl but
mostly CD's these days.

One song I could never get
to play right was
"Birthday" off "The White Album"{Beatles}.

Cheers.

Analog for warmth is great, but it's so behind the times.

I love a CD that has not been polished. Basically a non-compressed CD is the best way to enjoy music in todays time.

You know...the ones that you have to crank your CD player on to hear it LOL.

I like vinyl better myself but not because I'm an audiofile but because I'm old school. It's the way I learned to appreciate music I listen to CD in the car because well a turntable just doesn't make sense there and tapes just don't cut it with me.
