A guitar that Jerry Garcia played everywhere from San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom to Egypt's Great Pyramids fetched over $1.9 million at an auction Wednesday night.

The Grateful Dead frontman's guitar — named Wolf — was sold at the Brooklyn Bowl, a bowling alley, restaurant and music venue. The sale price includes the buyer's premium. The proceeds are earmarked for the Montgomery, Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center.

The guitar was owned by devoted Deadhead Daniel Pritzker, a philanthropist, musician and film director who bought the instrument in 2002 for $790,000.

Brooklyn Bowl in New York City hosted a live auction that saw Jerry Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar sell for $1.9 million including a $300K buyers premium. The guitar was purchased by Brian Halligan, HubSpot CEO and co-author of Marketing Lessons From The Grateful Dead: What Every Business Can Learn From The Most Iconic Band in History. Halligan’s pre-premium bid of $1.6 million was matched by an anonymous donor, so a total of $3.2 million went to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Jerry Garcia first used Wolf – which was built by luthier Doug Irwin – on September 5, 1973 as part of a Garcia & Saunders gig at a private party held for the Hell’s Angels. Garcia used the guitar through the first half of 1975 and then again full-time in the fall of 1977 through the summer of 1979 as per Relix. Wolf came out of retirement in 1989 when Garcia started to experiment with MIDI synthesizers and was last thought to be played by Jerry with the Dead on February 23, 1993. Since his passing, the guitar has been used by a number of musicians in a number of settings over the years including by Warren Haynes for many Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration performances.
Warren Haynes playing Wolf at"The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration performances" were great I saw them 2 years in a row at Tanglewood in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts.

Wow, 3 million dollars? That would certainly buy you quite a few guitars. :P

At the risk of exposing myself to ridicule, I never really understood the fervour over the Dead.
To quote Shania, they don't impress me much.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm not sure about this, Matt. But, I think you have to be a Dead Head.

Like everything else it is a matter of taste, I for one have been plenty moved by their music, others not so much, to each his/her own. I saw them in 1968 Seattle when I was teenage and had fun, then over 200 + shows later Jerry died. I must say had fun 200+ times over the course. Live is so much different than studio, also the scene was good for a laugh or four, "never had such a good time"

I hear ya, mud. A good time is always a good time no matter what. I'm glad you had yours. I would never look down on anybody having a preferential choice of music (English choral music comes close though.) .For example, I am not a Tragically Hip fan even though they have an obvious following for a variety of reasons including non-musical ones. The band doesn't need me for the success it's had. :P
I prefer to call a lot of these bands, many lacking commercial success (but, not all), cult bands that do not have to stand on their music alone for a following.

Often it is a rounding up of the wagons, not unlike any other love in, with camaraderie and shared purpose.

In the Grateful Dead's case, the experience is often larger than life, and those in attendance are not shy to express this vocally louder than about the Dead's music.

In short, it's a party! Music aside, it's time to hear amateur hippie drums, folkie wannabes, and, surprisingly some of that is good whether you're straight or on acid or tripping on your preferred enhancement where it all sounds great. Rednecks need not apply.

If the Grateful Dead have a good gig - BoNuS!

I guess it comes down to good, better, best. It's just a good thing that we don't judge performers by the lack of fans or there would be a lot of fun missed out.

Peace, love, and great times whatever your choice. :D

And now the curtain is pulled away and we see why Phreddy spells his name thus.
Pretty cool Fred.

There are tons of artist who get lots of raves and yet they do nothing for me.

I'm sure I like some stuff you guys wouldn't.
Case in point, I listen to NuMetal sometimes.
I wouldn't want a steady diet of it but once in a while I rock out.
I miss my hair on those days.

actually, the 'phred" goes back to the Doonesbury comic many years ago. my friends started picking up on it, and when they sent me anything it had that spelling. I even have a birthday card from my grandmother that was spelled the new way.

I'm also known at work as "phred zeppelin" and "grateful phred".
