It's all about exposure man. You have to work harder at being known then you do at your music. There's literally millions of bands out there fighting for 100's of contracts. Out of those 100's of contracts, how many do you think will be handed out in Kansas City? If you really think your band is record label good, maybe you have to go where the labels are looking. Have you considered taking the band to L.A., New York? Got any demo's? Try sending them to clubs in bigger cities, see if you can get any of em to bite and take a road trip for a week or two.

It also doesn't hurt to know someone. Do you know any of the members of the bands that have been signed, or have gotten big contracts for other projects?

I know a few of the LA singer-songwriters. Gabriel Mann was responsible for most of the music in Arrested Development, and is a close friend of Sara Bareilles.

I also know Garrison Starr, who was signed, and then dropped, and doesn't want to be signed again.

Pohato771 is right it does help to no the right people. My son has a Friend who's Father is a Music agent and one day we were talking about how I play guitar and he asked if I was in a band. Well I said not at this but have played in a few but I would never be a rock star . He said it is not just being good its who no and can market you. I guess he no's what he is talking about because his Daughter is also one of the top female singers today.

Design a poster and hit up the nearest Kinkos. Invest in a staple gun and put one on every power pole on main street. People won't come to see you if they don't know you are out there. Advertise yourselves.

Excellent point.... marketing yourselves is a powerful way to get folks to know you even exist, along with continuing to get clubs to perform in. Demo CD is also a must along with a press kit, which you can easily put together yourself.

Just a suggestion, but I believe Myspace and other networking sites allow you to set up a page for your band. if you have friends it is a good way to get rooted in your area and expand from there.

I get a lot of booking offers through MySpace. I have some friends who have a band (together) and they're playing a battle of the bands this Sunday in Buffalo, all set up through MySpace.

I was asked to play in the next one at the same club, but it happened to be on the first day of classes...

Try not to sound original. Record execs hate originality.

Find an existing band on the radio, copy their sound and wait for the record deal. If it doesn't work this month, change your sound next month to match the radio. Repeat until successful. Put out one single, then fade away.

Sometimes its just luck...
As a local band, we played a small rock club getting good response from the people that owned it & the small audience present.
2 months later a band with a number 1 hit at the time came to play at that same club (sold out show).
Turns out, the opening band that was touring with them got lost on the road & couldn't get to the gig in time.
With no where else to turn the band asked the club owner,
"Is there someone local, worthy of filling in?"
The club owner said our name & they called us!
We showed up ready to go & to our luck the show rocked!!!
I mean it was ELECTRIC!
I remember all those fists in the air as we ended the opening song...
They didn't know who we were but they loved it!

Next thing we knew we were asked to go on part of the tour with them...
Even though we were only on our own independent label...
We played several shows (east coast - US from FL - NY) with them to many packed clubs.
It was a great experience!
But it just goes to show u, anything can happen!

Not sure if this is a sarcastic post or not... :)
(Cause it's true that record companies are just looking for the next Nirvana...)
But I believe in doing your own thing.
If your goal is to become one of 'those bands' on the radio that sound like everyone else, more power to ya.
But originality is what gets you remembered. 8)
