This was originally posted in the Jazz bass section but I've received no replies. I thought I'd try this section as I need some informed opinions.

Hello forum members: I will have a credit on a returned new American Jazz bass in the next week or two. With the option of a full refund or credit towards something else, I have been contemplating a Masterbuilt bass. All 9 luthiers have impeccable credentials and have crafted some of the finest guitars on the planet.

My question is who would be your 1st and 2nd choice if you were to have one of these pros make you a bass?

Most of the builder's profiles mention 6 string guitars they've made for the who's who but not much talk about basses. I did note however that Jason Smith has built instruments for Flea, Geddy Lee and Steve Harris.

I'm not after anything distressed or road worn. Just a new pristine bass that plays like butter and sounds just as nice. Geddy's 1966 Fiesta Red Jazz comes to mind. Killer tone on the R40 tour.

Looking forward to your comments!

I thought I might get this started. Although, I can't answer your question first hand my research did come up with this. Others will chime in with their take. Anyhow, here is what I found. First off this in no way suggests the other builders are not capable, and they, as you have mentioned, excel in other areas.

1) Dennis Galuszka once had the most experience doing basses. It is possible that this may still be the case.

2) Jason Smith is a bass player.

3) Greg Fessler has several honourable mentions and some time as a builder.

I don't know if this helps, but it's something, LPBJ.

I see you are a fellow Canadian. I'm in Guelph, just west of Toronto. Happy Victoria Day long weekend!
