just wanting to let everyone know, you folks should try a 250k audio volume and 500k audio tone controls. over the years i bought into the fact that the stratocaster should be 250k volume and 250k tones, well......the modern amps are more bass heavy and that screws with the brighter tone that that strats are capable of. i have both vintage sounding amps and modern and i like the vintage sounding ones better. they are brighter. i put a fat 50's in the bridge and 57/62 in the middle and neck and switched the tone controls for 500k and the volume remained 250k. it made a fantastic difference, don't knock it till you try it. i kept a .1uf cap on the tones and it was so useable, you would not believe. i think we have been decieved. if you like the deeper "modern" sound then keep the 250k tones, but if the more vintage sound is your thing give the 500k tones a try i KNOW you wont be disappointed. sorry to disrupt the "blind truth" logic.

Some folks, including many right here on this very forum, aren't playing "modern" amps. Thus your hypothesis may not necessarily apply to them. It might prove beneficial to do some experimenting with pot values but any blanket generalizations about the outcome is merely speculation.

ehh....i just had an idea, i had experimented with and it worked really well with one of my strats i had sooo much trouble getting the sweet high end out of. i know, i know its just an "opinion" and who cares. tone is subjective blah blah blah. i have just read so many posts over time and always folks never were happy with what they heard and i just thought i would use their and my dissatisfaction to good use and find out why. it was worth it. i disconnected my OD pedals because of the success with the tone controls. i'm going to do it to another of my strats too. oh yeah i have an AC30 and Fender amps too and the change is noticeable in both brands. what goes in must come out.

It may in fact be a worthy idea and I may give it a try the next time I have my shop guitar opened up for some other reason. But one player's ear does not exactly provide empirical evidence to support the premise. And as you observed, the impact of such a mod is most keenly noted when playing through a contemporary consumer-grade amp (usually equipped with the crappiest speakers the manufacturer can get away with).

Disposable gear = disposable tone.

sorry Arjay, but I think that's the worst pun I've witnessed on this forum.

How about "disposable gear is generally lightweight, portable, and doesn't break the bank"? Or maybe. "you won't be heartbroken if it falls off the back of the pickup truck"? So many ways to go with that.

That statement still makes sense if you substitute "partner" for "gear"...
The problem with generalized statements is that they're, well, generalized. While what we do is specific to us.
There are no silver bullets or panaceas. What works in one specific context can not be assumed to work in all others. The context needs to be defined, but few people making claims bother with that.

The volume pot being what it is was not based on randomly picking a number, but based on the windings and resistance of the pickups combined with what amplifiers were on the market.
The tone pot being what it is was based on what roll-of was considered compatible with the music styles being played.
Feel free to change either, but don't feel free to say that it's a universally good change. If it were, the guitar manufacturers (who had access to different strength pots and used them in other models) would have used them. They didn't, because it isn't a generic improvement. It can be an improvement in some cases, but in those cases I'd argue that the buyer bought the wrong guitar to start with.
