I started playing in 1974. We had a band of about 8 , but the song everyone wanted to do was SUMMER BREEZE " (THE ISLEY BROTHERS) version. That solo by Ernie is a monster. Does anyone remember a song they were trying to learn that gave them fits???

I recollect that Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" provided hour upon hour of frustration as I struggled to get the syncopated harmonic melody line down. It wasn't the first song I ever learned (that honor falls to Wilson Pickett's "In The Midnight Hour") but it sure was a ball-buster.

Secret Agent Man by Johnny Rivers! I always liked his tunes and my uncles band always played that and Tommy James' Draggin the Line, always like sitting in and playing those two!

The Ventures Medley (Walk Don't Run, Perfidia & Lullaby of the Leaves).

I think it was from their "Live in Japan" album.

Tin Lizzy.
The Boys Are Back.
That one was frustrating for me.
By far NOT the first song I ever learned but certainly the one that most had me pulling on my hair.

Other than the songs in the "Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method, Book 1"?

First full song I learned was Embryo by Black Sabbath.

On the acoustic, Outside Of A Small Circle Of Friends By Phil Ochs that F sure was a pain and lot of chord changes for a beginner, C,D,C,D,C,Am,F,E,Am,F,Dm,G,C,Am, Eb,Cm,F yeah that was a handful

Mel Bay is where it all began. "On Top of Old Smokey" was quite a challenge playing upside down left handed style on a Sears Trutone acoustic steel string. Haven't progressed much since then. :(

I think the first song I ever learned how to play on bass, that I remember, is "With Or Without You" by U2. It was easy for me because it was 4 notes, 8 to the bar. That was when I first picked up the instrument and I couldn't tell you anything about it at all. Kind of weird to think about that now, after almost 30 years playing.

since I picked up guitar late in life, I made the executive decision to only play my own songs! (I decided that playing other people's songs *badly* would probably be kind of discouraging!)

You know, that was always a focus of mine, too. I never was much into covers, except as filler if you didn't have enough songs to play or something that would be fun to do.

The absolute first song I learned as a kid was Cotton Fields.
It was a group lesson.
We didn't take any theory.
We just learned how to tune and how to play some basic open chords.
I think the second song we did was Get Back.
There was no third.
By that time the 10 one hour sessions were done and we all went our separate ways.
I learned on my own after that.

On the acoustic it was Hank Williams' "Your Cheating Heart" being that as a kid I lived in Hank Snow territory. A dumbed down version of Windy and Warm by Chet Atkins was my instrumental standby.

Back to the westcoast my first electric tunes were Rumble by Link Wray, and for vocals The Game Of Love by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders.

When I listen more closely to old 45s (with all their mistakes and often simplicity) I kind of regret not throwing my limited skills into the foray. Fame was not out of reach from some of those teenage fans of yesteryear.

I think that popular great, good and bad recordings will always have a following considering the variety today and tomorrow as well.

Hey! I might have been another band member to have my mug on a lunch kit.

I haven't really learned to play any songs yet. I try, and I like to think that I get better, but I cannot say that I have mastered any songs. That won't stop me from playing them, though.

The first one I tried learning was possibly Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. A couple of lifetimes later, and I still haven't perfected it. There's much more that can be done.

My first song was Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones. Funny, when you play it clean it sounds like Buddy Holly!
