I watched a Joe Cocker documentary on Netflix (Canada) last night. Very entertaining and insightful. By all accounts a sweet and very likeable guy, really admired by other singers. But he had his problems with drugs and alcohol.

It is yet another knock on the integrity of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that he is not in it. How can that be justified?

I highly recommend watching it it if you have the opportunity.

I've always wanted to start a Joe Cocker cover band. :P

I and my better half with several friends had the good fortune of seeing Joe Cocker at the local fair for free the year before he got the Grammy for his part with Jennifer Warnes and the 1982 song Up Where We Belong. As if he wasn't famous already, his next set of performances came at a premium.

Seeing how he gave it his all for several outdoor shows at a fair which was freely open to everyone, I too believe this unique raw talented artist has paid his dues, and earned a place in the R&RHOF, Pudbert.

On the other hand, I don't put a lot of weight in awards as most have some question to validity. I've seen this first hand, but that's another story.

Are sales or popularity the deciding factor? Or are low sales and a much needed boost more to the point. Some of the world's best artists never reach the taste or lack of taste out there in La La Land. Many of the best performances are never promoted. Many of the worst are passed off as big hits even before the public gets to choose. It doesn't matter because they'll think it's fabulous based on what they've been told. That's how the system is supposed to work. Once in awhile an underpromoted or lesser appreciated goody upsets the apple cart.

Population and technology changes the measuring standards. Timing factors in. What about talent or smoozing or talent and smoozing? Maybe politics? Sean gets no Oscar for establishing a classic historical movie series from which the musical answer to Meryl Streep reaps opportunity and an Oscar? Jimmy Page and Vic Flick couldn't even help Shirley Bassey win that little guy for Goldfinger!? Even the Nobel prize has been compromised with a blatant political change far from the original concept. The Walk Of Fame is no award. Instead it is paid promotion, and who and how are these experts deciding who wins and who loses in these games?

The best we can do is admire the red rug, take in the stage show, support and enjoy the ones we choose, and allow others to do the same for their selection.

My vote goes to the ones that the award truly represents minus the fluff. YMMV. Meanwhile, for the deserving ones like Joe maybe a round of 'Up Where We Belong' is in order. :P

Thanks, for alerting us about the documentary, Pudbert. I'll keep an eye out for it.
