My guitar has a horrid resonating note!
Is it possible that something is broken in the body or neck of my telecaster?
My guitar fell over a couple weeks ago and there is a small ding on the fingerboard, but aside from this, I discovered today, (acoustically), when I play an open A along with a G or F# note I hear a resonating vibration that is quite dischordal emanating from somewhere on/in the guitar. And additional, (seemingly not quite a semitone), note vibrates loudly. Not unlike when some loud music causes an object to vibrate in an odd frequency.
Has anybody encountered similar, or able to confirm something?
The guitar is not a cheapie, but the most recent fender telecaster elite.

You are not in the good forum for answers .

Check for all piece can come loose or move.
Check neck to the body screw, tuning machines.
Is neck in parallel to the body ?
Neck curve may move and truss rod are loose, check both.
Do a complete and professional set up.

See a qualified luthier if you have no experience of these

Truss rod being knocked loose and resonating would be my first guess.
Second guess would be the string tree.

As for "not quite a semitone", keep in mind that a fretted guitar uses equal temperament, and all intervals except octaves are slightly off from the resonating frequencies. A minor third played on the fretboard, for example, is always going to be around 15 cents flat compared to the 6:5 resonance, and a major third around 14 cents sharp compared to 5:4.
So when there are resonance problems, they often sound slightly sour.

Check for loose frets, since the neck was impacted.

The guys have pretty much covered it here, especially with a full setup; but, how and where your Tele fell will more than likely determine where to start looking. Although, I doubt this - a close look at the posts alignment and the locking mechanism, tightness of nuts and washers surrounding the posts, and screws attaching the keys (buttons) are areas to consider. I sometimes put my ear to the unplugged body edge of a guitar to hear resonant sound when matching the tuning of strings or whatever (more so with acoustics). Not saying this is or isn't recommended, but it might help to locate your problem by increasing the acoustical sound (if you omit the amp) and then using elimination if it's mechanical.

Here's another shot in the dark. Change strings if you haven't. Remove one and install one and so on. This will help to prevent your neck from any change in pull or relief as it is now. (This of course would be different for truss adjustment, etc. however, it will give you similar conditions that you had before string change). Make sure the strings are seated correctly and that you give them a good stretch by hand before tightening. Try to give each post an equal amount of wound wire as best possible. That is to say not excess on any one post. Clip any excess string wire after winding. Look at the saddles and see that they are as expected. Again, all this is a shot in the dark and you probably have already considered this.

Interesting that you said the resonating note is not throughout. That could be beneficial on pinpointing the problem. On the other hand it could be more difficult to trace. Let's hope for the best.

Regardless, when you do find the problem, Tony, drop us a line here in the Forum. It will be great to hear from ya. Best of luck with that nice Tele.

IMHO Whichever route you take, Tony, a full setup correctly performed is your best friend.

I second the nomination that the truss rod is loose. I've experienced this with my Tele, although I can't explain how it came to be in that state. It was playing nicely at the time.

I also second the getting-pro-help if you're intimidated by truss rod adjustments. On some tele's, this requires nec removal. Not rocket science, but can be scary the first time. Look for a good setup guy in your area. They're not typically that expensive, depending on the scope of work.

Fixed!
I loosened all the screws on the scratch plate and retightened them but not as tight as they initially were.
I noticed the horrid note was less profound when pushing down on the scratch plate with my hand.
With all the screws out, the vibration was gone, so I re-screwed, not as tightly.
Thanks for the help everyone. I appreciate it.
Thankfully a simple solution.

That's great news, Tony. Thanks, to you too for letting us know your solution. It may come in handy for others in the future. :D
