I have a few mustangs too (a III and a IV)

I have three very good tube amps, (Fender, Gibson Goldtone, and a Marshall) I can tell you that while there is a difference, the gap in tone and response is not as wide as has been suggested.

I think they sound pretty f----ng good for the money you need to invest.

I have about 20 guitars, with the lion's share of electrics being USA made Fender and Gibsons. and as another point of reference, I've been playing guitar for over 50 years, professionally for well over 40.

I've gigged with the mustangs when the time or venue didn't allow for a complex change out, and they've done the job. I prefer the tube amps, yes, but the mustangs did just fine in these situations (single set w/multi band show)

I have NOT tried a CODE amp, just points of reference using the Fender offering.
Go to a store and try one for yourself with your axe, then see what YOU think...

In the end, which is not really an end, I traded in my 20+ year old half blown, corroded connections, including spiderwebs and some kind of green goo in one corner of the cabinet I could not identify, Peavey Bandit from 1984. I got a fair trade in price for it. Then I spent about 2 hours at the store playing with several 12+, AMPs that I could afford and sounded and did the things I want. (Keeping in mind someday, when I think I am good enough of a player that "other people" would enjoy listening to me play.) When that someday comes, and I have more dough for a really nice AMP, I'll happily spend whatever that cost is because 10,000 hours from now I am confident I will not be restricted by budget or space.

With that said, I have to say I am 100% happy with my Marshall code 25. I am a bit of a geek, so I love the technology features of it that really work well on both my phone and tablet using bluetooth + free Marshall CODE app. I can create and save my own tones or modify and save any of the 100 presets there are. I have learned a bit since I originally made this post and am really enjoying playing and growing my Guitar/Gear collection.

Thanks for the input! :)

Congrats on making your choice DAM3D.

While I too prefer tube amps, I also enjoy foreign cars and records when they work and when they don’t decline as they age. The same can be said with old cars, old records, and old amps. It’s pretty plain to see fun and frustration comes many ways. Wanky tubes = great tone. Feedback = great tone. Broken necks, hard to stay in tune, and the list goes on. The alternative? Well, I’ll leave that to the beholder for brevity.

A former audio professional who worked for/with me and who is a well connected musician with some of the big boys of the trade also has a love for tube amps. So much so that he has dozens of them. He told me that he is now sampling them all with his Kemper (as arth1 alluded to), and he is choosing to only keep a few chosen ones. Whichever tube amps are kept, fortunately long time friends and work associates are techies close by.

I know where you’re at with skill versus gear. There’s some guitars I would love to add to my arsenal, but I wouldn’t do them justice at my age and present skill. I took sailing lessons at the age of 8, grew up boating with boats of all kinds and sizes, and envied the yacht owner who didn’t know the bow from the stern.

Now that I think of it, maybe that axe that caught my eye isn’t such a bad idea after all.
Enjoy your new amp, and great Strat DAM3D.

+1000!

Quit jerkin' off and buy yourself a *REAL* amp. Learn how it best works with your guitar then start experimenting with the EQ settings to create the tones you want.

+1000 and applause.

You wanna sound good with that sexy beast of a real strat? Get a real tube amp.

I have both a vintage tube amp and a Mustang III modeling amp at my disposal. For what it's worth, there's some stuff the tube amp can do that the modeling amp can't and vice versa.

The tube amp is just a starting point. Then come the stomp boxes. Where the Mustang amp has virtually anything I can think of built-in.

The tube amp has a better clean sound, but the Mustang can do high gain (Super Sonic/Marshall) sounds better.

I can definitely say the Mustang sounds 100% better in headphones, as the tube amp doesn't have a headphone out at all. Mustang has an effects loop, tube amp does not. It's definitely a trade off to get that beautiful clean sound. I like both of them, and have them set up side by side right now.

You should consider a Fender Super Champ X2 Digital amps have a very long way the past 10 Year’s or so and the X2 is a hybrid digital / tube amp. It has a digital preamp where you can choose from 16 different amp voices and then it’s tube driven post with some very nice on board effects I have the limited edition of this amp (wine red with blond cover ) and it sports an upgraded Celestion greenback speaker. It really can growl when pushed an has excellent sounding tweed and blackface options The amp is very responsive and has a very nice Marshall and Vox voicings as well It’s s 15 watt with 10” speaker so it’s a bedroom or small venue amp. But believe me it can get LOUD. there is a head and cabinet version of the super champ also made as well if you need something bigger.

The clean tones are very typical fender clean - warm and creamy. You also have access to the FUSE software as well to pick which stomp boxes and effects you want and you can. Adjust the tube bias for higher gain.

It’s an extremely versatile amp that I’m quite happy with. I chose it over the blues jr. loved the blue jr, it’s a one trick pony. One sound only unless you start acquiring pedals I decided to keep it simple and just get what I’m looking for in one package. So, the key is know what you’re buying an amp for. Bedroom playing vs gigging small vs larger venues? Sticking with one style of music and songs or do you need / want versatility?

I came very close to going with a Hot Rod Delux II as it really wowed me with its gain and tones. But it was just too much amp for what I needed.

Hope this helps

The Tweed and the Hot Rod Deluxe are the closest you can get to classic Fender tube tone without breaking the bank nowadays, though many purists frown upon modern Fender amps, especially these compact ones...

I use a Hot Rod myself for bar and small to medium club gigs, and it sounds killer either by itself or mic’d up.

It’s lightweight enough to be carried without assistence and fits any car trunk...

It’s a tube amp for the road.

I really appreciate all the replies on this post! Thank you all! :) I just wanted to tell you a newbie story that involves my American Pro Strat and my Marshall CODE 25 amp.

One weekend, all of my family was out of town (evil giggle), so although I missed my family being home, I recognized an opportunity that only presents itself to when my family is not in the house.... So, mid-day on a Saturday, I went into my small den, plugged in and started playing some. I played with the volume set at 5, which I thought might break local noise ordinance rules...but no, I checked the rules and it was ok, so I upped it to 6. Window was open in the room. I was playing some classic blues stuff and some stray cats, and then went into some heavier tunes from Judas Priest, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, MUSE, and then some of my own creations. After about 30 minutes of playing, I had to take a bio break, so turned everything off and started to exit the room when I head a voice yelling from outside...It was my neighbor across the street yelling, Darin! Keep Going! it's great! So I waved through the window at him and said ok! So I went and peed and came back to play more for a couple hours. I looked outside when I called it quits and three of my neighbors were standing in my driveway looking up at my window, clapping. That was a great day. :)

This is an interesting thread that caused a lot of tube/solid-state discussion back in early 2017, then faded out ... only to be resurrected over a year later by the OP with posts on where he "ended up" ... which resulted in mostly a 2018 regurgitation of the 2017 discussion. Just making an observation -- that all being said, kudos to the OP for capturing his well-thought-out opinions and experiences.
