I should have mentioned this in the eBay thread that is circulating, but didnt think about it until a friend mentioned this tonight

Anyway - I had bought a strat off of ebay a few years ago - I got the guitar and pulled it out of the case and immediately noticed an awful smell - the guitar reaked, the case STUNK something awful! The only conclusion I could come to is that a dog or some kinda other household pet had to have pissed in the case - I dont think it was a cat, because cat urine has such a destinct odor, we would have recognized that (maybe) Not that im an expert in cat piss, but there used to be a tomcat near my old house that constantly sprayed all over the cover I had over my Harley and it was nasty!

Anyway - I was talking to a friend at the music store and got to talking about this, and he had a small dog that used his guitar case as a literbox at one point

I ended up selling the guitar after very minimal play -

Just wondering if anyone else has ever had anything like this happen?

The only strat I've ever bought off ebay smelled like strippers, cigarettes, and a hint of cocaine when I pulled it out of the case. I've come to the conclusion that it belonged to Eric Clapton at some point in his career.

You no what that reminds me of . A few months back I was reading on another forum that one of the big box music stores had a sale on some cases very cheap but that when people got them they smelled real bad there were some post about people having to air them out and it would not go away, I do not remember what net site it was though maybe someone else has heard of this problem and who it was that was selling them.

My pit-bull mix (Crusher by name) never pissed in any guitar case of mine. BUT, on the other hand, he only pissed into the road case my Crown Microtech 600 was on in ONCE. Was practising some singing a playing for a gig. I left the room for a beverage as he was walkng in. Got to the door with the soda in hand and heard this YELPING HOWL & he shot out the door like a bullet. Then I noticed the pool of urine in/on front of the road case. Figured he got the 220 watts from 110 volts right between the legs. I laughed so long & hard I nearly pissed the the floor myself. After that, you couldn't drag him into the room again.

I bought my strat on ebay. I think I was very lucky, it was a great guitar and after taxes (bleedin' taxes..) it still worked out cheaper than if I had bought it all myself here in the UK. The guitar was pristine and the gator hardcase was emaculate and smelled lovely. Since then its started to develop a bit of a smokey smell (and my cat loves sleeping in it)

I bought a couple of SKB molded cases for a strat and tele. The cases were bought separate from the guitars. When I first got them they had a strong smell. I looked up the cases on a commercial website, then read the reviews, and others were complaining about the strong smell.

I'm assuming that the smell came from the manufacturing process (dyes, glues, and such). After owning them for a few months and the cases being open when I played, the smell finally went away.

My cats also like sleeping on them.

I've bought 3 of my guitars off of Ebay, and never had an issue with any of them.

But when I restored my Musicmaster Bass I needed a case. I went to the local music store asked about a case. And since I'd spent all my money at the time on the guitar I had almost nothing left on the case. The guy at the store said he'd make me a killer deal on one of a couple old cases that were laying around in the basement. I paid $30 and than spent a day or two cleaning cig butts, mouse crap and other debris out of the case.

Once it aired out it was all good, still using it.

Our male cat once peed in my Gibson Ripper case, so you may have something there!

Man, there is nothing worse than the smell of male cat spray. Well - maybe skunk, but what are the chances?
I don't think it ever completely went away. Hardshell case finally wore out - replaced with gigbag

I dunno -- maybe spray it out with Febreeze and throw some aftershave in there

That cinches it! Your cat is smoking ganja in your case! I keep telling you people you need to close your guitar cases or your pets will party in them!

I had that once when I purchased a brand new case. It had some type of chemical odor, but it did go away after a few mo. I noticed it on several of the cases at the store. I figured it was something in the plastics or the fur from the manufacturing process.

This is the trick about Ebay-MANY sellers will give a vague description of an item (it doesn't matter-guitars, amps, clothes, whatever), and then cover themselves with 'ask questions before bidding'. I find that some sellers on Ebay are notoriously vague, even when they answer your questions. Caveat emptor!
