I'd pick up a beginners bass book. I know the book that came with my Squier Strat did everything with notation. I believe it's called Fender Guitar Method, so I assume there's a bass version.

I imagine you'll also take lessons at school. I've seen kids join band before (in high school, even) and not been able to read, or had even played an instrument before.

I recommend getting a private teacher for lessons.
Try out a few and pick one who teaches the styles your interested in learning.
Also pick one you feel comfortable talking to.

Or you can click on and try these sites

studybass.com
activebass.com

Good luck, mon! :D

I can't believe the teacher wouldn't be able to teach you, at least. Even if he can't play bass, he should be able to teach you how to read music and apply it to bass. Electric bass is the same as upright bass, but with frets.

I know my teacher in high school couldn't play flute, but it didn't stop him from teaching several hundred kids how.

8notes.com also has a good instructional section, though I've never seen the bass page.

I agree, and want to add: Find a bass guitar teacher.

If worse comes to worse and you can't find a good teacher, you could go home and take the music and put it into tab. I'd recommend trying to learn though. I really wish I could read music better than I can.

If you REALLY want to learn, then I can help out just like I help out wiiman8 on his thread about "learning scales". Read that and most of what I was teaching him also follows on the bass, but as far as learning how to read actual music, then that'll cost ya  . Seriously though I can help you to learn enough to make your instructor's head spin in just a couple of posts. There's the ways that they WANT you to learn, then there's MY way that totally smokes them all. That's part of the reason that my real nickname is "SHRED".

I agree with all the above advice! If all else fails, find some recorded music where the bass is 'up front' and you can get a feel for the tune. I learned by listening to Tom Petersson's lines on nearly any early Cheap Trick album. Music where it's all eighth notes on the same note won't help much.

I can't believe that there's a music teacher out there that has no knowledge of basslines! That's what the left hand is for in piano! Plus, I'm a former HS band member (and proud of it), so I think that there's more there than that teacher is letting on to.
