The only beer I buy ever since I tried my first one 21 years ago.
Bassists have such good taste in beer.

For those who haven't tried it and might be curious, make sure you buy it from a vendor that does high volume sales.
Don't go to a little mom-n-pop shop.
Moosehead is said to be the only beer left in North America still made according to the original recipe.
1864 or something like that.
Like, from back in the days before there was a such thing as preservatives.
If it sits too long unrefrigerated, it can go a bit skunky.

Oh, and only buy the green labelled lager.
The Red labelled ale isn't as good.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Someone talking about Moosehead is probably only marginally less popular than sharing the love of short scale basses, :D

This is proof bassists know best I guess! Love that stuff!

That brings up an interesting question for this topic - how many drink (and what) when
playing a gig?

I drink water only during the gig, then afterwards maybe a beer or three.

I used to play drums out on the town with a pianist, guitarist, and a trumpet player. I might or might not have a drink prior to showing up at a venue to relax. I seldom indulged when playing, because one time while playing I was presented with several drinks by patrons at a club and I was tipsy when I got up from behind the kit. Sitting, playing. and drinking can be a bad combination with surprises. If that wasn't bad enough, the gig went so well we were invited to the manager's office for more refreshments. I guess I didn't drop a beat.

That is an interesting question, what do those of us that regularly play out drink at gigs?

Our normal operation is to be at the venue 1 1/2 hour before a gig. We can be set up and sound checked in an hour but I like to pad it a little in case there is an issue. First thing when I arrive I like to meet the owner/person in charge for the evening, just good to check in, see if there's any questions or concerns about us setting up, which door should we use etc. At that time I usually order a beer. But after that, I'm a soda drinker all the way, and a Kwik Trip coffee fan for the ride home. (for those who don't know Kwik Trip is a popular chain of convenience stores popular for their coffee and their service, lots of locations)

To me it's just not worth the chance to drink more when I have to drive, the only people on the roads after a gig are other musicians and the police. :D Our guitarist is a 10 year sober alcoholic so he and I regularly get some comments on not drinking but that's ok too. Our singer drinks but never to excess when we're being paid to do a job.

To each his own, just be responsible is my feeling on it.

I'll have a beer or two before a show to calm my nerves, but nothing too much to where I'd get too buzzed. Afterwards, that might be a different story. :P

. . . and, perhaps, the odd unfortunate road kill. :P

I played out tonight and last night at two different senior centers. Two different bands. Mostly acoustic guitars, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and vocals. We get about 12 musicians at each gig, and about 40 people in the audience at both places. We play a lot of country, pop, bluegrass, comedy...we play for about 2 hours each night. We go over very well and the same people come back to see us every week. I've been doing this for about two and a half years now. It's good fun, get to meet lots of people, make lots of friends, and get 4 hours practice in every week. It's all volunteer, but we do get snacks and perks. It's a good time. I don't use an amp, but when it's my turn to sing I use the P.A....I just play my Martin D-35 and everything sounds great.

Sat in on a blues jam tonight; got about 40 minutes on stage. Lots of pretty experienced people helped this relative beginner have a great time and sound pretty good too. Got to play on a long take on Little Red Rooster where the drummer was really bringing the dynamics up and down, a blast to play and a real crowd-pleaser. A good night! 8)

Sounds like you all had some fun gigs. 8)

My girlfriend and I are thinking about doing a couple of open mics, that are local, during the summer for fun. Not really related to our main music projects and probably acoustic. You know, a couple of songs and get out. Of course, that means I'll have to swap out my bass for an acoustic guitar, which I don't actually have, and I'll have to do some practicing on guitar playing, since that's not an instrument I'm the most comfortable playing, especially publicly. I've done it once in the almost 30 years that I've been a musician, so there you go. It's just strumming chords, so it shouldn't be a big deal and besides, it will be an excuse to get a new guitar! :P

On behalf of families that have or had loved ones in a senior center/care home, I thank you and all those who volunteer to add pleasure to and put smiles on the faces on the residents, families, friends, and staff that benefit from your volunteering and good will such as you described. It's a wonderful thing and very appreciated by all. Good on ya, djwayne.

Cheers!

Back when Alley Oop strolled the jungle I belonged to a Folk society where we gathered, and some dude played acoustic while a musical chair type game with a guitar being passed around would stop with the music. If you were caught with the guitar you had to go on mike, play and sing, or play, or sing with or without a song sheet. There was always someone available for backup. Not accepting was shameful and dangerous. Hippie love didn't apply here.

Needless to say that's how I got into the acoustic crowd, and, because my harmonica preceded my guitar, I even tried the Dylan guitar/harmonica combo for awhile. Dylan went electric, and I followed the crazy man Keith Moon by buying a set of vintage Premiers. Now I'm back with an acoustic to supplement the electric.

So, I think you have all the reason in the world to get that new acoustic, Paul. You have my vote. :P
