my gigging has dried up. But I've been having a lot of fun recording in FL Studio.

I would post some of those in the 'Original Recording' thread, but nothing is copyrighted yet, and I'm working with a writing partner. Can't post it until we do the paperwork. :(

Truth be told, I don't really miss gigging too much. I miss the really good gigs but I don't miss the rest. I think about those times when I drove really far and lugged all my gear into a place just to have a boring night. Spending the night trying to protect my gear. Loading and unloading in the rain. Sitting around before and after sound check waiting, waiting, waiting. After doing that for a long time, I'm enjoying some studio time.

You have the option to post as "creative commons" license which these days is just as good as an official
Harry Fox Agency license.

Did a trio gig on outdoor patio. It was different but still fun. Inside the place
most were watching The Bruins win (sports pub). Beautiful night and gig.

Yea, it's nice to have a few outdoor gigs this time of year. Not many, just enough.

Interesting, this is the first time I'm hearing about that. I did a little research and this makes me nervous:

"A CC license is used when an author wants to give other people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that he or she (that author) has created."

We most certainly don't want anyone "building upon" these tracks. Basically what we have at this point is a lot of music with no vocals. AKA - ready made backing tracks.

Then post a read-only version. You can use Box, DropBox, etc. too.

Interesting view on that Ghost. I can see the good and bad of ready made tracks. It’s sort of one stop shopping where it’s an inexpensive and time saving way to get some great and not so great additions to your music at an affordable cost and, perhaps, in a way that might not be possible otherwise. It certainly solves multiple takes and studio effort trying to get that desired or repeat effect. For a one man band it also solves not having a second person to handle a mix or a third party dependence. There are other reasons for doing it, of course, aside from the big boys with the big toys going on the cheap for profit sake.

I was adding some plugins to my Daw yesterday, but they were equipment related as opposed to backing tracks. That got me thinking, how much do I want to add my many supplied backing tracks? Haven’t they already gotten airplay from many others with the same DAW or download (more on that later). I have many of the tools available to make my own (granted most are superior to my talent . . . but, not all). Do they have to be perfect? Maybe yes, maybe no. There’s some pretty simple hit tunes out there. Even crappy ones that get the approval. Lucky for me.

I, like others, enjoy jamming with backing tracks. Even if I don’t use them for performing or recording, I may get some creative juices going. Performing with borrowed backing tracks instead of original ones obviously is, well different. Good and bad. Backing and supporting tracks are even found on the professional stage. Besides, drum machines have improved greatly, and so too are there a variety of great percussive samples upon which to draw from. These do give a beat, and with other recorded instrument sampling, they have their place; but, their performance sucks. Zoom in on the wave form, pan to the buttons. Still, any performance is better than none . . . or not. :P
It’s getting to be where we’ll all be saying, “Oh, yeah. Pretty good song. I’ve never heard that before, but I’ve heard the backing track”. That’ll put it up there with the lyrics.
As for gigs, I think it depends on the performer and the performance. Lots of great and not so great vibes come and go live. You only get a taste of that satisfaction of a well done performance with recording; although, the end result can be Nirvana either way,
Maybe future gigs will simply be two or more people bringing sampling equipment and hitting auto play. Bring your own samples to an event, and maybe you’ll get to jam. 8) Remote synced hookup from various locations will probably happen, and likely do now. Wow! Whoopee ding! Zoom in on the headphones.

I’m not such a Fuddy Duddy or recluse
that I don’t recognize the pioneers and geniuses out there in EDM and the sampling world; but, geniuses and pioneers don’t pass this way just because you have the tools at hand. If ‘sounds like’ is your thing, perhaps sampling is the way to go. If the tools get you to where you’re going - Nothing wrong with that. Sincerely. Who wouldn’t like to emulate a great artist if they could? Who wouldn’t like to be part of a band with well respected and tested backup? There is a lot of sampling I can enjoy. I think even Elvis would have appreciated some of today’s remixing and sampling of his hits. Too bad he isn’t here to comment. Just don’t give me the home boy’s David Foster production. Thank you. Thank you, very much.

Me? I’ll stick to originality if that’s even possible, which is highly unlikely. My fear is that my original composition(s) may be inadvertently nailed for sounding like an unknown to me copyright. I may sound like crap, but it’s mine, and judging by the crap out there, I’m in pretty good company.
Then again there’s the old adage that applies to gigs, “Give the audience what they want, but leave ‘em wanting more”. Even the best perform music that bores them to death.

Stage fright? Been there done that. Funny that I ended up helping those to overcome such a thing in front of a camera or audience, but still have a little sf myself. What a liar.
Aw, fuggedabout it. :D
Okay. Maybe, just maybe, a sample will find it’s way to my music. Never say never. Double liar. I’m an equal opportunity dude.

No Lawrence Welk though, and I won’t be bringing a turntable and samples to a gig. I left recorded music behind when I DeeJayed socials and weddings.

My "ready made", I mean the tracks were created from scratch in FL Studio. I either programmed or played everything you hear. My main concern is some other person downloading my rack, adding their own vocal and then applying for the copyright. That would really really suck.

I'll look into posting as "read only". Another thought that comes to mind is compressing the track to the point that it wouldn't be usable professionally but you can still hear the content ok.

Thanks y'all, sorry I'm slightly OT here.

Gotcha Ghost.

Copyright can be confusing for sure. Even when I worked in the industry the grey area dice were rolled, and sometimes you won and sometimes you lost depending on who the players were. It seems authority doesn't want clarification and simplicity. It works well the way it is - for some. When it works as expected, things are good. I did learn, however, money and the strike of s pen almost always changes the rules.

These days one’s music becomes international almost instantly. Collecting or managing copyright at a distance is not impossible, but it is a challenge even for organizations to be sure, especially knowing abuses are not unheard of in the neighbourhood backyard.

One can sit on the bench or get in the game. It does not always mean a home run; but, you might get lucky and get that hit.

I digress as the gigs go on, and yet I do wonder how many more would gig if it wasn’t for copyright and other hurdles. When I was a kid, I was briefly a member of AFM, and often the stage in establishments was off limits to non members or open to a few select ones. That surely must exist today.

Where there's a will there's a way.

Another way is to use a sound tag or edit the metadata so your track cannot be used.

I have a bit of a story.

I took up guitar nine years ago at the age of fifty-four. Took lessons for four years and just hacked around for the next five. Learning was difficult but I’ve enjoyed it and would consider myself to be an intermediate player.

The local music store offers a program called the Adult Jam Band program. Like-minded players form a band under the direction of a teacher and we learn to play together. My wife (keyboard – formal training as a young girl, very little playing in the ensuing years) and I joined in October. It was challenging for both of us and a lot of fun. We’re in a band of six, between the ages of 53 and 67. We play mostly classic rock. None of us have ever performed before.

Back in early April we, along with the other three bands in the program were offered the opportunity to perform live in a showcase at a local restaurant/bar that hosts live music. It was a tough decision to make, none of us felt ready for this, but we ultimately agreed. We selected five songs and worked very hard over the next month to get stage-ready.

We performed on Tuesday night in front of a very friendly and enthusiastic crowd of around 150 friends and family of the bands. The lead-up was nerve-wracking but as soon as we got into the first song everything came together and we played as well as we ever have. We were as ready as we could be, did our best and delivered a performance we could be proud of.

It was exhilarating! It was a wonderful experience made all the better because my (adult) children were all there and my wife and I could share it together.

It may never happen again and I’m fine with that. I think I’ll ride this high for a while. Check one off the bucket list!

Co hosted a jam last night. Quite a few just played acoustic and sang.
I played and sang with a drummer and bass player and we did :

Messin' with the Kid
Sweet Home Chicago
Walkin' the Dog
My Babe
Hey Bartender

Great fun!

Your jamming experience sounds like a hoot, Pudbert. Ain’t nothing like getting your feet wet, and performing live (especially nIce to share with family and friends). Thanks for adding your funtime here. Glad you had a great gig.
