Great night, good crowd for a "Thirsty Thursday" gig. The band

Nice, Mike. Sounds like a great gig. 8)

Tonight was great fun. We used the foursome and started out with Ventura Highway
and some light rock type tunes. Got some unusual song requests and I think we hit most
of them with the exception of Bon Jovi.....lol. We did do some Hendrix, Clapton, Santana,
Petty, Wilburys, Journey, Skynyrd and even a couple of Zepp tunes. Three nights in a row
and now ready for a break.

Pretty good night for the first two sets anyway. Third set we tried some new material
that wasn't quite ready for primetime because of requests - - chalk it up to lessons learned.
We got paid and booked 4 more gigs there.

That new stuff will be old polished stuff before those next four gigs are completed. Way to go grabbing those extra ones, Mike. That’s success in anybody’s books, and you get paid too? :D FSB

No Bon Jovi?

Sounds like a good time even if you snubbed the 80's. :D

Doesn't anyone else besides myself and BMW-KTM play gigs at all?

I was looking back at some of the earlier posts here. Then the thought came to me how times have changed when it comes to gigs and open mics.

Throughout much of the 50s and 60s bands and performers had an abundance of locations to share their talent (or lack of). I count myself as lucky enough to have seen that in Liverpool’s original Cavern Club in ‘65 where multiple groups played in one evening, hoping to be discovered for bigger things.

Before the digital era there were plenty of record stores where distributors and other sponsors would support live performances, and a friend of mine had a mother who worked for a store which encouraged the band to play in that record store on occasions. Yes, that still happens occasionally in music stores, but those Mom and Pop stores and record establishments are now few and far between. In fact they are almost nonexistent. Smaller used and new CD/Record stores are around and we have a large Convention Centre record show once a year.

Where else would a gig be? Things like YouTube have become a contender. As for TV the morning and late shows give us a taste once in awhile, but they don’t fill the appetite like they used to. I know this because the networks I worked for replaced all this local fare with information television, and, along with bands (legitimately or not) pricing themselves out of work, as far as the big money broadcasters are concerned, production done as a monopoly went to what we see today. No more nationwide or local Band Stand, Shindig, Hulla Balloo, or Soul Train show like there was to showcase local or established groups and individuals. Amateur shows are sparse. Now that’s an open mic. Once in a while we get PBS or other specials covering the bases. Then there are the odd limited viewed local cable shows which still serve a purpose and give experience and support to a lot of bands and performers.

Okay, getting back to the occasional gigs . . . where I grew up we had regular beach parties with generated AC power with conversion from our vehicles. We gathered driftwood throughout the morning, played beach volley ball, acoustics, and bongos in the afternoon, and electrics and drums with bonfires and parties in the evening. All of this on the beach in town. It was a popular event even amongst the adults and authorities. Forget the noise, fires are no longer allowed on a one spindly tree remote barren spit in a lagoon along the ocean or on any other beach in most cases. The last full blown event that we had was when we talked a new fireman into providing us with a legitimate permit to show the pumper truck crew when they asked us to douse our last huge bonfire. On the flip side, maybe today’s shredding, moshing or a rumble might not be wise on a beach. :P
Down the road a ways, there were folkies who followed Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Lightfoot, and others. They ate some funky brownies and bananas while wearing beads and flowers in their hair. There were establishments where card carrying membership in a nation wide folk society was in effect. Here you could see Peter, Paul, and Mary, Burl Ives, and any number of celebs who would perform or unexpectedly show up to chill out. The same happened elsewhere in another city or town. There were daily workshops to learn your instrument, improve your vocals, and share the trends. A lot of open mic evenings. A guitar was passed around in a musical chair fashion while a guitarist played on stage. He or she suddenly stopped where the person left holding the audience guitar was not only asked to do the open mic, but to refuse was brutal. If you couldn’t play you had to sing with or without a song sheet. You might even be embarrassed to leave to allow the lineup at the door. Perform and you and your friends were there for the night. It didn’t matter if you sucked, love and peace trumped that.

Across town flatbeds were common for battle of the bands most every summer weekend in the tourist town still full of buskers today. Now days the flatbeds only show up for organized events with a scheduled performance when parking space is allocated or maybe a Jumbotron is the entertainment.

There are more bars and less pubs and lounges in some parts. There are more people, more single acts, more karaokes, more music DJs, and more streamed music. In this music town nightclub stages where local and big names acts once entertained have been replaced with music tables and dance floors. Single and duet acts perform at the restaurant in the neighbouring bookstore.

House jams with friends have sometimes been replaced with backing tracks. I once lived where almost every home had an instrument rather than a computer.

Yep! There will always be the local gig, but it may or may not be coming to a town near you.

If you are lucky enough to indulge whether as a performer or as a fan, enjoy the experience at the fullest. It is, unfortunately, slowly becoming a piece of history unless, as Willie puts it, “On the road again”.

As for your comment above
thanks, Mike. This has proved to be a cool thread. :D

Gig on! :D

I am always happy to read about your gigs, Mike and Matt, and I'm grateful that you share your experiences. I enjoy your gigs vicariously through your writing. I have not been able to gig with a band in at least 15 years. I do jam with my neighbors now and then. My neighbors across the street all play guitar (I wish we had a drummer). There's a mom and dad and a teenage son and daughter. I thought that my occasional jams were not enough to write about but I will in the future.

Rock on my friends!

Did a show tonight with the 5 pieces and man it's so full sounding when the
sax and keys are on and we were all on tonight. First hour was a Tom Petty
tribute and we had a female singer come and do the Stevie Nicks part in "Stop
Draggin' My Heart Around" and we ran through some popular and some not so
popular TP tunes.

After intermission, we did an hour of Beatles (before and after) meaning some
songs were Beatles' tunes and some were from their solo song catalogs. The song,
"Hey Bulldog" was a lot of fun to play and many said they loved that song.

All in all, it went very well and I think we'll be doing some other shows there later
in the summer.

At least they didn’t hold you hostage. You got to go home and you got paid. Speaking of Cash. Apparently, the San Quentin gigs are appreciated. :P
