That's definitely a lot of info on Brown Eyed Girl, the song, that I didn't know. Kind of sad that Van never received any royalties from this huge hit for him.

But to my point, LOL, I just don't get refusing to play songs that you think are tired and boring. I still say if you're a cover band, which some of us will only be, that's the price of playing out. We had a keyboard player at one time so we had a blast doing some stuff by the Tubes and Supertramp that we thought were fantastic. But when you might be losing the crowd over some songs you're playing for your own benefit, you still need the "tired" standards to reel them back in.

But here's a latest video from our July gig in Bayfield, WI. No Brown Eyed Girl included......

guys, you're really cool Image
sometimes I also play for fun a kind like tonightgigs ☺

Hello everyone :D

Hello everyone :D

Hmm? I think I’ve seen that pedal board before. Of course! I know the cool cat jammin’ and having a good time with the vocalist and sax player. :D
Nice. Alex.

It was great - some good new songs came out better than I expected and
I could sing all of the high notes (but I dropped the key a full step on some). :D

There was a time when I could only sing high notes and couldn’t do the low notes. I think I’ve matured and burnt out my voice, and now it’s the other way around. No more choir boy approach for me.
I’m okay with that. I can kinda sing like Barry White because I have a pedal for the job. Sadly, I can’t do Smokey or the great Bobby Hatfield. I’ll have to see if I can dial in Bill Medley and Bowzer.

Amazing lineup of talent at tonight's open mic/blues jam. It usually runs from
7:30 to 11pm but tonight it went til 11:30. Just about every performer who got up
there came to play and it's been a long time since I've seen and heard so much talent
in one night. I think I counted 12 Strats and 4 Teles along with a few P and J basses.
It was smokin' hot all night! The kind of night that only happens every once in awhile.
We had blues, and tunes by Van Halen, Jeff Beck, SRV, Allman Bros, it was all good.
The age range went from early 20s (a few) to late 60s (many) and talent was everywhere.
A great night indeed!

Glad you had a great time, Mike. That looks to be great fun.

It’s not unusual for the kids to show us old guys a few tricks; but, it’s refreshing to show the young uns that as long as the knees keep a knockin’ the fogies keep a rockin’ :)
After all, that’s what they have to look forward to. :P

True FSB - I was hoping others here would post about their gigs. This IS a guitar/bass forum right...

Well, if it’s any consolation, my nickname in my high school yearbook was Gig! That should qualify. :P

So it wasn't a "gig" in the strictest sense, and it wasn't last night. But last Sat 11/4 we had the opportunity to play in a benefit that was just outstanding! So the back story is the benefit was for a 15 yr old young man who has cerebral palsy, he lives with his grandmother and they are HUGE supporters of local music in our area. They come to many shows around town, usually afternoon and early evening ones. As a musician it's hard to find anyone that enjoys the music more than these two. Over the years as he has grown up it's obviously become harder for his grandmother to get him out of the wheelchair and into her car, so the benefit was being put on to help her raise enough money to get a wheelchair accessible van so transportation would be easier.

The benefit started at 11am and ran until midnight, 13 hours of nonstop music, 13 bands! There were two stages set up with full PA and lights on each, provided by various bands. And unlike most of these multi band events, everything went smoothly and each band had just under an hour to perform. It was a great time and we had a blast participating. Now I hope they came up with the money they needed!

Just a great feeling to participate for a local cause that meant something.

This photo was from last winter, it was a Sunday afternoon gig and about 1/2 million degrees below 0 and yet they were out to watch us.

Fantastic post, Chris. What a great photo too. The young fella looks like a great kid (you look pretty good too) :P

Nice how people come together for a worthy cause like this. I’ve worked on some pretty major charity events, and one of them includes kids with Muscular Dystrophy and the Variety Club. All challenged kids are special, but most don’t see themselves that way. They set an example for all of us, and they give us a better outlook to strive for.

I don’t need to tell you how good it feels to give attention and help to meet their needs. You can see the joy on both of your faces. The payback and rewards speak on their own. Highly recommended.

The event itself sounds like battle of the bands with camaraderie. What a great experience and fun no doubt.

Good on ya, Chris. Best wishes for your friend and Uber Fan. I hope there will be many more occasions for him to attend and to enjoy your music.

I’m in my home town in BC for Christmas and a friend asked me to stand in for his absent guitarist at a pre-Christmas warm-up party at the Elks Lodge last night.
I always bring some gear with me when I go home for Christmas because I know a number of musos from there and there is frequently a jam somewhere since lots of guys (gals) get home for the holiday.
I knew only a small handful of the songs they played so I was winging it for pretty much most of the night.

We did pretty well considering we had very little rehearsal time together and I learned about some music I was not familiar with.
Weird crowd though.
Zero feedback from them during a set but glowing reviews when mingling between sets.
It was a much younger crowd than I’m used to playing for.
Perhaps that was the difference.
How young?
Let me put it this way ... there were a few fights.
It’s been decades since I saw a Donnybrook at a gig I was playing.
The young and dumb and full of hormones crowd at its finest.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
