Steely Dan performed last night at the Anaheim Honda Center. Of course, it was a great show. Pretty deep setlist although no "Reelin' in the Years", "Do it Again", or "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". Guess you can only do those tunes so many times....

Plenty of selections from my favorite Steely Dan album, "Aja" though.

Donald Fagen is impossible to ignore... looks like Walter Becker is TRYING to be ignored. Their lead guitarist and drummer worked their butts off the entire evening. Certainly they are doing much of the SD heavy lifting. Ready Freddie Washington played all those cool bass lines on a vintage Fender Precision.

Don't miss this show if it comes to your area

Was Jon Herrington playing lead with them again this year? Last year he did and used a white Telecaster mostly. Fagen kinda looked like some version of Ray Charles strolling around with his melodica between sitting at his keyboards from what I recall.

Hi Mike...yes, Jon played many of the memorable (and difficult) guitar leads last night. Something about him reminds me of Lyle Lovett, but unfortunately we were about as far away from the stage as we could be. Jon played the white tele (maple neck) and a Gibson 335 or something similar as well. He also had a solid body electric similar to an LP, but I don't think it was. We had to use binoculars (sp?) to see any detail. Jon is brilliant and tasteful.

Fagen was definately channeling a Ray Charles vibe.

Do you know Jon H?

I don't know Jon personally, but I saw him with them last year and tried to find out who he was. His chops were great and he had a smooth technique with nice phrasing, dynamics and riffage. 8) Check out his site :

I bought the Aja DVD from the Classic Albums series over the holiday weekend. It was quite good. Walter and Donald would give you some insight into how the songs were written, produced and recorded. Includes live performances both archival and new(er). Interesting stuff.

In the 70's growing up, Steely Dan was one of the first bands that I really got into, even before the Beatles.

Their music to me was like being into science class. They made you think. You felt cool to sing the lyrics, the album cover art and names. The song titles, Fagen's voice, Becker's guitar, I mean, can you possibly get any better?

I slept out in 93' when they started touring again, and have not missed them since.

They are "Kings" of all they survey!

Loved the early rockin' SD albums! Countdown to Ecstacy and Can't Buy a Thrill are my faves.

They kind of lost me with Aja. Didn't care for the slick jazzy-rock sound.

Excellent writers and always had GREAT players. Saw 'em twice in the late '70s and their shows were pretty bad. Terrible sound mix and they rushed through everything -- wonder why? haha

I bet they are killer live now!!

They didn't tour in the late 70's. July 4, 1974 was the last show of the seventies.

They've done some amazing stuff over the years, one of my all time favourite bands. I never really tire of listening to them, I've never seen them live unfortunately.

I've been listening to Walter Becker's "Circus Money" and his vocals sound much better than when I saw him last fall croakin' out "Haitian Divorce."

The CD has a cajun-ish, reggae-ish, jazz like funky feel. It's growing on me, but some of the tunes are winners from the get go.

That's just exactly the way the CD hit me -- There were some songs like "Door Number Two", "Upside Looking Down" and "Paging Audrey" -- I liked immediately while some of the others took a few plays.

I am one of the dozen or so people on the planet who also owns 11 Tracks of Whack. In the past I always viewed WB as the junior partner, but after listening to enough of his solo work it seems to me that he was the one who came up with a lot of the edgy lyrics that The Dan is famous for.

Exactly! :) 'Paging Audrey' sounded good from the get go, despite the somewhat odd title, but you can't judge a song by it's title.
