One of my favorites! 'Kid Charlemagne' and 'Reelin' in the Years' are just two of my many Steely Dan favorites. This is progressive jazz/rock that musicians should not ignore! :)

Indeed.....they were/are awesome. I have to admit I was such a huge fan I burned out a bit. Everything is good and it's hard to select a favorite.
Royal Scam might be one, along with Fagen's solo Nightfly.

I too love Steely Dan. The cool thing about them is that their sound is so unique and distinct. I love how they meld the raw distortion of rock with the smooth silky sound of jazz. Plus the plethora of outstanding session players that have played with them.

They ain't much to look at, but they sure sound great! :D

stratmansteve, there are some short clips of that on Becker's site and it sounds like typical Steely Dan.

Thanks, I have heard the clips. Picked up the CD today! Hope to give it a long listen tonight.

For Blues lovers, Buddy Guy's new CD "Skin Deep" came out yesterday and I got that one too . . . but that's for another thread.

Great idea for a new thread, maybe call it "New Music Releases/Reviews" ?

It could be one of those threads that lasts forever . . . like the song game.

Anyway, it seems I inadvertantly hijacked the thread so I wanna steer it back to The Dan. I mentioned earlier that I had seen SD three times and, while I don't usually buy tees at concerts, I buy Steely Dan shirts. I just dragged a couple of them out and what surprised me is how old they are. I've got one with cartoon profiles of Don and Walter on the front from the becker/fagan tour '93 ! The other is from the Summer 1996 tour -- Steely Dan Sex Tip No. 19 -- the fez. They're both a bit . . . ahem . . . snug fitting these days.

'The Fezz' is one of those tunes where you have to really listen to it to hear what's going on beneath the main melody, IMO.

Another favorite of mine is "Haitian Divorce". They have a knack for writing lyrics that can be interpreted as satirical or sincere.

I must apologize for not ever putting my ears on Steely Dan... you guys are very educated on this band and seem to have great words to say about the musicians involved... I just don't know why I never thought to listen to them.

Bet you can guess what my next CD purchase will be? Anybody have any suggestions on a good Steely Dan CD to start with?

If you like SD lyrics with a caribbean or reggae beat you'll probably like Becker's "Circus Money". I haven't yet had a chance to give it the deep listen it deserves. Only been able to give it a couple of spins during the morning commute.
