One of the most talented group of musicians I've ever had the pleasure to see. It seems that they peaked in the 70's, but never lost their charisma or ability to entertain. Their recordings are good, but to see them live is a real treat.

I love their blend of rock, funk, jazz, r&b and pop. From their early recordings to the obscure, boots and fairly recent '03 releases, they've always found a way to keep me interested in their music.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker at times come across as magical, musical marvels and they've had some great players through the years.

Larry Carlton, Jeff Porcaro, Elliot Randall, Jeff Baxter, Denny Dias, Jim Hodder, Michael MacDonald, David Palmer, Phil Woods, Wilton Felder, Lee Ritenour, Wayne Shorter, Chuck Rainey, Tom Scott and Steve Gadd to name a few.

I saw them during the "Heavy Rollers" tour last year and was very impressed with Jon Herrington and the tones that he got out of that Telecaster. 8)

Anyone else ?

Steely Dan reminds me of an awesome time in my life where, as a really young kid, I was starting to get into that phase where you find real music that you like, as opposed to the kiddy flavor of the week. I would always spend the night at a friend's house on summer nights and every morning we would wake up and his dad would take us down to the donut shop blaring none other than Steely Dan, "Reelin' in the Years".

I ignored the 70's pop culture because I was travelling, but am now discovring the best of the music from that era. Some of it was really good. Steely Dan was certainly among the best.

Steely Dan is awesome. I saw them 2 times and I have to say for a band that had their heyday in the 70's they really brought it. This was no reunion tour like most of the others They are among my favorite bands of the 70's, particularly their later stuff, the royal scam being in my top 20 albums of all time. It was music that was without precedent, and no one to this day has blended the various styles of music that they were able fuse.

I also saw 2 steely dan cover bands in NYC in the past few years...not bad.

That's one of my favorites too along with Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic. 8)

I won two tickets from our local rock station and a limo ride was included to see SD in Charlotte,NC back in October 1993. My wife likes SD but isn't a real big fan but went with me anyway They played for 1 and 1/2 hours, took a twenty minute break, then came back out and played for 2 hours. Sound was just like listening to Steely Dan playing in the studio.

Hey Miami Mike... Hope you're feeling as well as possible under the circumstances. The wife and I send our very best to you and your family.

You'll enjoy this open letter from Steely Dan to Luke and Owen Wilson last year. Seems there was some "drama" concerning SD's "Cousin Dupree" tune. This letter is soooo funny and proves Donald and Walter's collective genius. I laughed my butt off for days.

Wife and I attended the Steely Dan concert in Irvine, CA last year... but no Owen Wilson appearance, even though he was paged. ;-)

Here's the link. Enjoy!!!

My most favorite bands are the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Steely Dan not necessarily in that order. I have almost everything The Dan has ever recorded (or released anyway). Had to replace all of my vinyl with CDs years ago because I wore them out.

Saw them 3 times -- Twice in CT and once in South Florida though I missed their June 8th show at the Seminole Hard Rock. Prices had doubled from last year, but my disposable income hadn't.

Also, I'm looking to pickup Becker's new solo CD, "Circus Money". Usually, I have their new stuff the Tuesday it comes out, but I've been too busy. Any reviews?

All Hail Citizen Dan !!!

I was in the military during that time. But I did buy their albums (back then.....it was vinyl).

Very interesting and thanks for posting that, U2Scott. Also, thanks for your well wishes!

stratmansteve, there are some short clips of that on Becker's site and it sounds like typical Steely Dan.

orvilleowner, you're right and Rick is one of my favorite players. I have one of his solo recordings and love the "live" Edgar/Johnny Winter recording where he mimics Edgar's scatting on "Tobacco Road" with his guitar riffs and who can forget his days with The McCoys (Hang On Sloopy).

Gotta agree,
Steely Dan has been one of my favorite bands ever since the early 70s.
I never was able to catch a live show, but man I enjoy their recordings.
Rock on Steely Dan....

Loved the early rockin' SD albums! Countdown to Ecstacy and Can't Buy a Thrill are my faves.

They kind of lost me with Aja. Didn't care for the slick jazzy-rock sound.

Excellent writers and always had GREAT players. Saw 'em twice in the late '70s and their shows were pretty bad. Terrible sound mix and they rushed through everything -- wonder why? haha

I bet they are killer live now!!
