Thanks. My perspective is derived largely from watching it all take place and the info I got was from CG's comments and explanations at the time and also from the comments I saw at the TDP.
My observation later was that the FDP's drop in popularity and activity came about in part by Fender's leaving but due mostly to CG handing control of the board over to others who had the same good old boy mentality that almost ruined the TDP and ultimately resulted in the creation of the TDPRI.
There were other factors at play with the TDP evolving into the RI version but the GOB thing was definitely a big part of it.
I watched that same phenomenon kill a couple of other boards. Those no longer exist.
Prolly the most notable was a private board dedicated to Taylor guitars which, like the FDP, at one time enjoyed the support of Taylor but in this case Taylor (quite rightly) pulled their support when they saw the beginnings of the GOB induced downward spiral.
The board that arose from the ashes of that never became anywhere near what the original had once been and that's a shame because they had great people, like we do here.

Those experiences are the reason I made my initial comment on the GOB thing a couple of pages back and I'm thankful this place has not gone down that road and even though strings feels we're already there, I know we're not.
Of all the boards I have been a part of this is by far the best.

Thank you, Brad.
I think your pet project is a success.

A lot of the older threads are my least favorite. Especially the ones that are constantly bumped to 100+ pages long.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a YouTube fanatic, I just find 232 pages of videos difficult to navigate. The thread is fine, it's just not my cup of tea. I'm scrolling the list of threads right now and I see plenty of fresh interesting content.

What are you doing? (328 pages)

You Tube thread (232 pages)

I saw some of that discussion at the time - and believe me, I can totally understand the perception and external appearance but it's not quite how it all went down. Totally a personal pet project here designed to draw more eyeballs to Fender.com and give folks a reason to want to visit the site regularly - my boss at the time wanted more traffic to the site (this was back in that earlier era of the Internet where it was important to state how many bazillion hits a site was getting month by month), and forums were certainly one way to pull it off for obvious reasons: you end up with folks bookmarking this section of the site and wanting to come back regularly. Duh. :-) Anyway, really not quite as an explicit direct correlation to any FDP- or TDP-related activity as I noted some inferred at the time around initial launch. Everyone here holds both of those sites, owners, and what they've done for collective appreciation of the brand in extremely high regard.

Ha, thanks! Don't get me wrong - I totally get what some folks are saying on this thread. But ... I don't think we're dead yet, personally. Perhaps I could get off my rear and arrange for a gear giveaway here and there - free guitars do tend to make the world go 'round. :D

Another thanks, Brad. Whatever one's opinion or participation it's a great Forum IMHO. With interested and interesting newcomers, and those like bill948 (nice to have you back Bill) returning, the Lounge appears to be a welcoming Forum that is appreciated.

Best

That's the spirit, Mike! I'll certainly try to help more on the "excitement building" side for sure, but at the end of the day I really feel that the quality of the content itself is really within you guys' direct control. Not seeing something interesting? In that case: start up an interesting convo and see if it "sticks"! :-)

I first came onboard here in 2007 or so and back then, the forums were a lot of fun . I even remember winning a $200.00 spending spree on here in 2008. The contest was for a Fender Dick Dale Acoustic but because I live in Rhode Island, I wasn't eligible for the big prize so Brad picked me to have a spending spree which I could use on the Fender online store which at that time, was only selling stuff like T-Shirts, Books, etc. Now though, I do see that the majority of the topics on here are pretty much the same and have been for months, which is why I don't come on here like I used to.

You aren't eligible to win contests living in Rhode Island? I didn't know that. I've lived in Newport for almost 14 years, so I'm not eligible, either. Is that some law around here?

Nick (nikininja) won the Dick Dale acoustic, if I recall correctly. I remember giljanus won a Strat too.

How about the Forum shirts - anyone here have them? I have two. Doc has two.

I don't know about that; but, until recently, that had been, and sometimes still is, the case this side of the border, so we have a habit of sitting back and watching the fun. Invitations are slowly starting to come our way to join the party, however. :D

Sometimes, it's not that we Canucks aren't welcome, it's just that Big Brother won't let us out to play nicely with the sponsor. Too bad - because hosers and toque heads are always open to a party. "Pass the beer hey?" :x

When I join a company-provided forum the last thing I'm thinking is "Gee, mebbe it's a good place to pick up some freebies from the sponsor".

Good point. I agree, Arjay. That's why I'm still here. If contests were the only reason for me to participate Facebook would have gotten my registration long ago, It still hasn't; but, other reasons are likely to drag me in. Contests certainly will not leave if I join up.

Contest or no contest it's the Forum that brings most of us if not all back. This lack of contest availability cross borders and elsewhere does, however, prove to others that most are here for the same reason as you mention. It's all good. IMHO.

And yet, if there were a party we'd still show up as I'm guessing you would too. I thought it might be of interest to give a comparison so others know that entering most contests from outside Canada have restrictions that are slowly being relaxed, and to put Jeff's and Paul's comments in perspective.

FSB

My thoughts on contests? Well, I do have a connection with American/Canadian contests. Games are in my blood as with most Canucks (think Art Linkletter, Pat Sajak, Alex Trebec, and Monty Hall from my neighbourhood to name a few). I worked with Claster productions out of Boston, and with Claster I directed the 5 pin series of Bowling For Dollars tested out here first in Canada. So I'm used to having another contest where I watch others participate.

There we no contests involved. Forum members were chosen at random for guitars,
pedals and gear.

The shirts were a for sale (special order) and very cool.

Here I am with mine not long after my chemo phase (which the forum members were super
and compassionate and generous to donate and send me a G-DEC (new at the time) so I could
keep my chops up while going thru chemo. I also have a Strat with a special "good well" signed
by Mike Eldred that I hold near and dear. This is the best forum!
