Fender apparently never clears out old dead user accounts. Note the Gibson forums lists significantly less users, but more posts. They obviously prune old user accounts periodically. A good portion of those 500,000+ users may be "bots" or "spammers".

Unless I'm mistaken, in the past, you would have to register in order to use the search function. Which probably caused a lot of registrations from people who never posted, but just wanted to do a search.
But yeah, also bots.

Arth, the people who signed up so they could search content would fall in the "legitimate users" group. But yeah some of them probably signed up to search one thing years ago and never used the site again.

I too miss many members here in the Forum. Some were and are like family. I'm pretty sure that many are still on call to participate. For whatever reason members have moved on or they become available when the topic is of interest. There will always be regulars, and others on standby to contribute a word or two.

I've noticed a recent increase of newcomers. Some past members have returned from a hiatus. Quite a diversity and from all over. Something's working.

Thanks, Roadie for your post. I believe Bob had a good point about the reading interest but not posting. I admit that I was a relative latecomer (compared to others) here in the Lounge, but I read and joined the Forum earlier on. Nine years ago this coming month after my joining the Forum, and about 5 years of being a Lounge Lizard, I got to communicate, be entertained, and learn with some of those early adopters like Roy, Chet, Doc, you, and others Mike. Glad I did. Having said that, I believe that current and new members will be able to entertain and exchange information in their own way.

I think Fender, Brad, and most of the Lizards old and new do a great job here. For the most part, not only have I seen respect; but, mentoring has also played a role for some who reach out. Perhaps, more female participants (like our resident Lizardess texasguitarslinger/Becks) could add an extra touch to the Lounge. My bet is that they read it, but for whatever reason, they may not post. Others may feel that they do not qualify for participation. It's a lounge gang! It's not a test that you have to pass. If you are not posting, and reading, I urge you to participate in the fun and information exchange.

In any case, the Lounge is not perfect; however, I'm not sure it needs to be or even should be. I'm thinking that one flavour can be boring for the majority while great for others. Judging by a lot of the positive comments, especially from new Lizards, the Lounge appears to be pretty darn good to kick back with as it is IMHO. YMMV.

Cheers!
FSB

I think of the forums as an open mic night, without too many who say "I will play with you and you, but not you!"
And like an open mic night, if you take it too seriously, you may miss the fun.

I know a couple of those are dead accounts of mine that I've deleted over the years, but they've never removed from the forum. I can't even log into them, even if I wanted to. They probably should go through that stuff and weed it out, but that might be a pain in the arse to deal with.

Deleting accounts that have posts is not completely trivial, because the software looks up the account to find the name of the poster.

However, deleting all accounts not logged in to for a year, and with zero posts is just a short SQL statement, and should clean things up considerably, freeing up names for use. (That would presumably also delete Mike Lewis' account, since he never bothered to post in the Custom Shop forum unlike his predecessor, Mike Eldred.)

After that, finding accounts with only deleted posts is slightly more involved, but still not hard. That would get rid of thousands of spammer accounts, but the names freed up might not be too valuable. Unless, of course you really want a name like cheapestcialis1047.

There has been a lot of one and done posts as of late, wasting time trying to help isn't a positive experience for those that post frequently.
But I also understand still what a newbie feels like, it can be overwhelming to some.
Other boards I belong to send a birthday greeting, sounds like a good time to notify those that haven't posted in the last year they will be removed if they don't remain active.

Absolutely, that would be a great place to start. It's the forum admin's call though, they don't have to delete accounts. Just like I don't have to sweep and mop my floors.

True. I wish more people would extend the simple courtesy of a "thank you!", or letting people know when an issue has been resolved.
Even if not the original poster, if a post was helpful, saying so doesn't hurt. It does quite a bit to ensure that helpful posters keep posting.

Off-topic: Is "jump the shark" going to be the Trite Phrase Of The Year for 2017, like "toxic" was last year, and "I can't even" the year before?

The phrase "jump the shark" has been around since the early 80's - a reference to the TV show Happy Days. I don't think it's going away any time soon.

I think it's a fairly safe bet that if somebody went to the trouble to create an account and validate it with the confirmation email in order to post a question that they will come back and find the responses. Additionally, there are a lot of lurkers who have the same question who will see it. I don't see it as a waste of time myself. I agree with you and Art, it is thankless many times but I don't think it's a waste of time. We can take some measure of pride that we're helping.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

And I thank you all for that, as I have been helped many times, though I stick around and say thanks
