Just spent an hour browsing around my local GC and shooting the breeze with a young kid who had a new MIM Standard on his lap and was trying to decide whether he should be purchasing another guitar he didn't need. I told him he likely had contracted GAS and needed to be careful with his decisions.

In the course of our discussions I hauled off the wall an Indian 'Squire" sunburst rosewood neck with 3 SC Duncan Detonators, Fit, finish, fretwise, this guitar was a 'babe' for $299. Even the neck had a gorgeous grain pattern and tint. I used it as an example of the range of choices up to the SRV's and the JM's which were hanging around and, if one knew the line, and shopped carefully, good stuff could be acquired on the cheap.

Presently under behavior modification therapy for chronic advanced GAS, I deliberately replaced the guitar and beat a hasty retreat.

Hope you are all having a great weekend. There's some good stuff on RAVHD and VH1....e.g...'Fleetwood Mac'.... and David Gilmour to name two.

Special thoughts to Mike and Chet.

Doc

Every time I go to GC or Sam Ash, I leave there with either a new pedal or strings, or both. I don't need them, but my lack of control gets the better of me every time. I haven't been to either in a while, and I haven't ordered anything online in a bit. I am horrible with money. If I have $20 in my pocket, I'm gonna spend $30.

GAS? Gotta Aquire Suff? Is that about right? I don't have it... I know better now that I'm older than 30. I try to get only what I need or can use to advance. I just ordere a Behringer AC108 and as soon as I know that it works my SP-10 will find a new owner.

Guitar Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) is credited to Walter Becker of Steely Dan (though he has a new solo CD out). Check this out:

I walked into a GC for picks and strings. Came out down $700. G.A.S.

I was told that it was "Gear Aquisition Syndrome" rather than "Guitar"

That kinda made sense since there's so many "toys" that go with a guitar that you can buy when you just gotta get something...

G.A.S. probably was 'guitar' originally.

But over time and mega-exposure across continents, music stores, magazines, catalogues, the strain mutated and became more virulent. Now succeptability is expanded toward acquiring amps, pedals, boards, even weird stuff like things y' beat on and blow into.

It's a sickness.

The horoor. The horror.

The acquiring of amps/pedals/boards is probably how it got expanded toward "Gear"

Classical "GAS"....and excellent choice of guitar tech. Fortunately, for Eric Clapton, Lee Dickson didn't look like that. "Layla" might have had a different muse.

BTW: I'll be 'somewhere near Seattle' between 8/15 and 8/25.

There was a book written about GAS, too. But I think it's out of print now. Anyway you can see the cover . . .

Yeah, I suffer from GAS 2. Been going to a support group (GASA). I'm the chronic relapser of the group. I show up every 2-3 weeks 2 pick up (pickup get it LOL) another "white pick". Oh well!!!

I'm recovering from GAS. There comes a time where having a closet full of stuff that doesn't get used or even touched isn't fun anymore. I used to have several closets full of stuff. Now I have two closets full, and I am still trying to weed stuff out.

I'm not against having a variety of stuff that I can use-as long as it gets used. But when it becomes 'closet candy', then that's when I have to rethink my priorities. I think that nearly everyone here probably knows how tough that can be sometimes.

I know what you mean. I have a whole studio full of equipment that is just gathering dust.

I've just put away a few guitars and amps that never seem to get used anymore, but I can't bring myself to sell them. As I've said before, I've never had buyer's remorse, but when I sold something, I've regretted it for years (or in the case of that '71 Mustang, a lifetime).
