I'm bringing an older amp back to life, and I need to replace the lackluster 12" OEM speaker that's in it.

I've been thinking about something from the Eminence line, but want something that's JBL-like. I can't get the speaker selector tool on eminence.com to work. 50W or so. Efficiency isn't important. For an open-back combo.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or something from another readily available manufacturer?

I've always been partial to Celestions. http://celestion.com/

What type of tone are you seeking?

For a "JBL like" vibe, there's really no substitute for an original. But by contrast, you've mentioned that efficiency is of little importance (JBL's are VERY efficient, typically with an SPL of 100 dB or greater).

For vintage blackface sonics, Weber and Kendricks offer some excellent choices. An economical option is WGS.

Celestions work well for modern, aggressive rock tones. They also have their alnico Gold series which are excellent but pricey.

If you need an indestructible high-power driver, the EV12L is probably the ticket (they are extremely heavy though).

Eminence has a full line of speakers but you'll need to determine what tone you want before picking the appropriate model.

I've still got 8 EVM-12Ls laying around that I pulled out of a couple of my 4x12 cabs, but I was looking for something a little warmer/rounder on the low end, and a little smoother in the upper mids and highs. I had a couple of JBL "MI Series" 12Ms at one time, and really loved those, but I have no idea when they were made. I can't find any information on current JBL guitar speakers.

That's because JBL left the guitar speaker business decades ago. And the "MI" series 12M's are not what I consider a true JBL. I was referring to the "D" and "K" lines.

For your "a little warmer/rounder on the low end, and a little smoother in the upper mids and highs" parameters, I'd recommend an alnico Weber or (if your budget permits) a Chicago-made Jensen P12N.

It also makes a big difference as to which amp you put the speaker into. A "Swamp Thang" sounds great in a HRDlx, but maybe not so great in a BJr.

I'm not normally much of a fan of Eminence speakers but the Cannabis Rex has a nice, warm, round tone.
It tames unruly icepick tones but still keeps spank and chime while adding a little bit of breathiness.
It also slightly aids clean headroom compared to Fender's Eminence made Special Design drivers.
The name, to me at least, suggests some kind of muddy, incoherent tone (I've had a toke or two in my day so I know all about clear-as-mud-head where you think you're thinking clearly but it's all just shyte) but nothing could be further from the truth.
It might be just what the doctor ordered.
No prescription needed either.
Unlike other products bearing that name.

It's going into an Acoustic G-60T. It's a 2x6L6 all tube amp, which was nearly a clone of a Boogie MkI. It's a nifty little amp, but has always been crippled by the stock speaker. The high gain tones are alright, but the clean tones have always been cold and sterile. I've tried it through a 2x12 cab with a couple of JBLs I used to have, and it was perfect. But I no longer have those speakers, and I'm trying to get down to one box that's about the same size as a Princeton (even though it weighs nearly as much as a Twin!).

If you're looking for a Boogie sound out of your Boogie copy you might want to take a look at the Celestion Black Shadow, also known as the C90.
It's what Boogie have been using for a very long time now in place of JBLs and others they tried years ago.
I like them. They're a good speaker. Under-rated if you ask me.

I'll try to find one to listen to. But I will say that generally speaking, Celestions are my least favorite speaker in an open back combo. They tend to stray too far from the "fat" and "lush" tones of a JBL.

In that case, the Eminence "Swamp Thang" just might be the ticket. Definitely great cleans, with a fat, articulate tone with great balance and great top end without being shrill at all, and it definitely handles high gain very well without changing the tone of the amp. After trying many speakers in my HRDlx (and other amps), I found that the Swamp Thang was perfect for both the clean and driven sounds. I liked it so much, I also put one in my HRDlx 1x12 extension cab that I use with several amps, including a DR head, a MB head, a Blackstar head, a Peavey head, and all sound terrific.

In fact, I use the extension cab with the Swamp Thang to test customer amps, it can handle anything and sounds great doing it (150 watt speaker) A 100 watt Marshal sounds phenomenal through that cab. :D

The Eminence Swamp Thang *could* be the ticket. It has the requisite power-handling capability, is relatively efficient, and its frequency-response is relatively broad (though not particularly linear). Sonically, it's a little fat-sounding in a bass-reflex enclosure but installed in an open-back combo cab should do quite well when driven by a 2 x 6L6 platform.
