Hey everyone, my name is Hector. I've been a player for about 11 years, but I've not progressed much... I still can't figure out how to tune up a guitar, and I think it was only last year or so that I was able to play barred chords for a whole song -mind you I have to take breaks by playing the odd open chord since my hand hurts a lot if I play a whole song in barred chord-.

I'm really into shoegaze bands these days. Like My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Alcest, and I'm wondering if anyone would know what kind of equiptment I should be looking at if I wanted to assimilate that sound. Or what setting I should put my guitar to.

Hey man. I'm really into My Bloody Valentine and Ride. They were great "shoegaze" bands. You need delay, tremolo, reverb and fuzz to get those sounds.

I like Swervedriver, Jesus & Mary Chain, Curve, and Lush....

And don't forget to look into chorus, flanger, and phaser pedals...perhaps some sort of pitchshifting effect every now and then. I forget the exact name and number of the pedal, but Digitech used to make a Reverb pedal that also had a "Reverse Reverb" which is also an often used effect in the shoegaze music...

You are right...I heard Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine used those reverse reverb units often.

From Wikipedia: Loveless was largely recorded in mono sound, as Shields felt it important that the album's sound consisted of "the guitar smack bang in the middle and no chorus, no modulation effect". Shields wavers his guitar's tremolo bar as he strums, which contributes, in part, to the band's distinctive sound. This technique—nicknamed "Glide guitar"—causes the guitar strings to bend slightly in and out of tune. Shields said that due to his use of the tremolo bar, "People were thinking it's hundreds of guitars, when it's actually got less guitar tracks than most people's demo tapes have." The guitarist asserted that unlike other bands of the shoegazing movement of the early 1990s, My Bloody Valentine did not use chorus or flanger pedals. He insisted, "No other band played that guitar like me [...] We did everything solely with the tremolo arm".

Check out www.guitargeek.com. They have gear setup info for a few of those bands, and for other types of bands, too. I don't know how comprehensive or accurate it is, their listings don't seem to have been updated in a long time.

I have heard some people criticize the authenticity of the Kevin Shields page on that site...

Good music choice you have there. Have you ever heard or listened to the Gloria Record? How about Mineral?

Those are good bands in that genere.

About your question, A lot of guys use Fender Twins & really clean amps & add effects pedals. I'd recommend a strong reverb for everything, and a chorus pedal too.

I used to play & write several songs in that style , contact me for more info if you need.

Have you guys heard of this compilation called "Like a Datdream"? It's actually got a really awesome mix of bands. I'd love to be able to play in that style but as I said I'm pretty beguiner stage, I don't even know what the tremolo is... where can I get a thorough lesson on guitars and stuff?
