Dear Fender...

Why so many versions of the Strat? American Professional, Deluxe, American Elite, American Standard, etc, etc,? Seems to just confuse and cheapen an iconic American guitar. Hendrix had like one guitar, just sayin'.

Love Mike

You think they're bad about that, you should see how many Les Paul models Gibson makes. It's ridiculous. :P

I share your view, Mike.

IMO Fender has never built a better, more useful Strat than what they cataloged in 1962. But I understand that there are those who want a Strat that sounds and plays like a Les Paul or a PRS or a Charvel so there you have it -- an endless parade of blasphemous sub-types available for every esoteric taste and budget.

+1 mike. look at the amount of guitars out there. let's say you wanted to buy a new strat. chances are you won't find all available models to try at a store near you. every guitar I buy is played before purchased. I have played strats and teles that I loved, and a few that I didn't care for. just too many choices imho.

Yah, they could cut the number of models by half and there'd still be plenty.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I think part of it is that what earlier were considered variations are now different models. Modern manufacturing with long automated pipelines and unskilled cell workers not trusted with deviations means that anything that varies will be a different model. I can't go to a store and say I want this year's strat, but can you please make it revolution red and with a chunky neck, and they'll call Fender and have one like that within weeks.

There's Custom Shop, but that's years of wait time unless you're an endorsed artist. And even more limited in which stores you can go to.

The plethora of models is one of the things that kills the small music stores. They can't afford to stock all the models, and combined with FMIC's demands that they carry at least a certain number, ditching Fender other than for used gear isn't just a choice, it's a necessity. But in the long run it means less traffic, so they die eventually anyhow.

I have more than enough guitars, but when I weed out the ones I don't play and eventually get a new one, it will probably not be a Fender. Because I will go to a real store where I can sit down and try guitars in a quiet environment, and discuss choices with staff that knows more than what's on the sales sheet. If any such store still exists.

Yep, for my taste just bring back the AVRI (Oh Yeah ... Sonic Blue please Fender), the AV 62HR and that's all the Strats I'll ever need to satiate my Strat needs. Those models were the high water mark IMHO.
