So, I've got a Highway One with CS TX Spc pickups. Nothing fancy, although it's beautiful by the classic modern design and the transparent deep red paint. I play it all the time - most days - and love it. Many of the best and most demanding guitar players ever on Earth such as Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, Buddy Guy, John Mayer, Eric Johnson, Knopfler, Buckingham, Gilmour and many other greats and perfectionists like Corgan play Fenders in general and Strats in particular. Like Corgan says, most of the great blues and rock legends play Strats. Yet, the rumors persist. No sustain. Les Paul's cost more and so they must be better. Ibanez has the ultimate in the Vai with good sustain and on and on. It's ridiculous. Why would perfectionist Eric Johnson play a Strat if it wasn't the best, and why would hyper-perfectionist Buckingham record with it and why would dedicated artists like Corgan use it? So last night I'm at a micro venue without a lot of time or anything. The amp runs through the house and you plug into the wall. Okay. How about some reverb? Sorry. How about some overdrive or gain? Sorry. Naked clean, my little Highway One sustains all day. Essentially, I play near clean all the time without really recognizing it. This little Highway has endless sustain - naked clean. Never believe anyone who says Fender's don't sustain. If you've got weak sustain, just back up the pickups because it's the magnets. There's also a steel plate from the bridge in the Highways. It's a superior guitar.

agreed. Whilst strats dont have les paul stupid sustain they dont have a muddy neck pickup either. Strat sustain is ample. Hold it by the head strike the B string and feel the body underneath the jacksocket. Thats the reasonance of alder you can feel tingling away. My guess is alder and ash focus the mids into the upper region rather than mahogany which focus's it into the bass end of your hearing. Anyway if you need stupid sustain point the pickups at the speaker.

If for some reason a strats sustain isn't enough for you, just add a touch of compression. A decent compressor is a great part of any guitarists fx chain.
