It has the original contour body decal but no fender logo.

It has a 3 way switch with a wierd thin knob.

The funny thing is I bought it used at GC online and it came with a case with no handle. The case was just shoved in a box with no packaging and no packaging in the case either. They also left an interesting document in the case compartment stating the previous seller returned it because they thought it was a fake.

The thing is...I love it. The neck is perfect. That mellow amber feel that is hard to recreate. The action is amazing etc. I have a really nice old 80's MIA electronics to put in it but I'm holding off until I try it out properly.

What's the history of the contour decal on the headstock?

It was advertised as a MIJ Fender. It was cheaper than usual but I'm not mad at GC. I half expected something was up.

I'll post more closeups soon.

On closer inspection there was a logo there. I can feel the old residue.

Again after a quick play I'm in love.

If it is a MIJ model I can tell why they sell for a similar clip as a used USA.

one thought about it possibly being MIJ (or something else). I had to order an after market switch knob, specifically for MIJ, for my 1996. The Fender brand ones that I bought at GC did not fit.

Might account for the weird switch knob.

You know, with the close up pics, I can see where the Fender logo was. If you look at it closely, you can make out the outline of the "F" on it, especially the bottom corner. It's kind of a shadow on the wood.

Pic of the back of the neck where it meets the body would be interesting. That's where you'd find a Made/Crafted in Japan stamp.

My first thought was that it could be a neck from either be a Squier or Telecaster Custom (which also exists with a large strat headstock), which was the reason the decal was removed. The remnants of a reverse F pretty much exclude it being a Squier, and a Tele neck wouldn't have the contour body decal.

Another possibility is that it had a front serial number that could easily spotted as fake or stolen.

If you can't find a serial number on it anywhere, that's a blow against GC. They're not supposed to sell guitars where the serial number has been removed, as they claim to not deal in stolen gear.

I am thinking Korean Squire. The tuners if original came on Korean guitars. The truss rod adjuster does not appear to conform to a 70's MIJ bullet style. The pickups also look Korean, have you looked under the hood of this thing? The knobs also look Korean, the numbers are slimmer and smaller than normal, but could be 80s style Japan or Korean. Would be good to pull the neck and look for markings as well as the looking under the pick guard.

FWIW

+1

The two-piece headstock is also noteworthy.

Thanks all. Good info.

It's been one of those oddball days for me. Check out what I just did to a $90 guitar. Haha. So I don't mind mutts.

I'd be amazed if this was Korean etc. if it is I'll be hunting down more or the same. Did they have the neck amber glaze aspect too? It feels classy. Check the sides of the frets.

If it is a fake I'll just PayPal a dispute and ask for money back. With no logo and the "it's probably a fake" note in the case should make it an easy dispute.

I'll open her up for more pics/stamps etc soon.
