The cops found the culprit but the best they could do in finding the guitar was trace it as far as Los Angeles where it was suspected to have boarded a yacht bound for Japan to be sold to collectors.

Many vintage instruments (often celebrity-owned) end up in such purgatory. Much like stolen archeological relics and Renaissance art, it's a tragic fact of life.

That's a great story. Matt. A '52 Tele? Wow! That hurts. Ouch!

I've seen classic cars keyed (scratched) by morons who were likely envious. In my neighbourhood when I grew up, we would not see that because we appreciated that an individual would share that special something for us to admire. We got it. Others, unfortunately, do not.

I know of sailing boats and other boats that are picked up and stored in holds of larger ships. These have been re-rigged and, at times, even masts and/or flying bridges are reconfigured. Three masted can become two masted that less knowledgable would not suspect. Add to that fibreglass modifications. Paint jobs go without saying. Motors are exchanged, electronics are added or deleted, and more are swapped. These boats are (like cars) transported all over the world never to be seen by the owner again.

Whatever is stolen it matters not whether it is a plane, boat, guitar, or trinket. It is a tragic crime on humanity that would be far better off without it. Too bad these thieves will never know the pleasure of owning from a legal standpoint. I guess there's some satisfaction in that the stolen goods will never be theirs . . . only the use of them, sad as that may be.
