Posting this one on behalf of friend (and former colleague) Bryan Beller, who just returned from tour to an unpleasant surprise:

These basses are not exactly typical pawn shop fare, so here's hoping they'll turn up!

Trying to look it up leads to big pop-overs saying i need a Facebook account. That isn't going to happen - perhaps the details and images could be posted somewhere public?

Wow, that is lots of gear to walk away. I feel sad for him ...

That's a very serious crime, fingers crossed he recovers his gear. It was a Public Storage facility, did they have CCTV/Security Cameras? Most commercial storage units do these days, it seems with that much gear they would need to enter the facility in a vehicle via the main entrance gate and drive it right up to the individual storage unit? Very high chance of ending up on camera there and possibly again in surrounding streets somewhere just after leaving.

Latest I've heard is that they've actually managed to find (and arrest) the culprit, although have not been able to recover the basses themselves as of yet.

That's a start. The culprit is pond scum!

Ouch. Well, at least we can hope that the thief won't be stealing anything else for a while, but I hope to see the basses returned. Some of them seem to be irreplaceable.

And I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but folks, don't ever buy anything that you don't know whether is stolen or not. If unsure, assume it is and ask for more documentation. There is so much used gear to choose from that missing a good buy is no big deal. But musicians losing their gear is a big deal.

In addition to playing a mean bass, Bryan's a fantastic writer too. Here's the full story, in his own words: http://www.bryanbeller.com/cms/index.ph ... toragewars

Current status is still the same - thieves were arrested, but the basses themselves have yet to resurface unfortunately.

Brad, thanks for the heads up and interesting and informative writings on the theft.

Bryan, I feel for you and your loss as well as the invasion with the deep feelings that are affected. From my own past experience, I know what it is to have your personal belongings (big or small) taken without your permission.

Having lived on several ships, it is well known that shipboard theft is a huge crime in that the thief may be the one you break bread with, work with, trust with your life (and they trust you for the same), and. perhaps, they share private quarters with those who are potential victims.

Unlike, civilian law, I have seen things handled differently.

Suspects are (in some cases) notified by a blanket announcement to return stolen goods in a neutral area that is secured where the offender is suspected, seldom seen or heard, and given a slotted time to give the goods back without punishment or identification through an honour system.

There is a risk, but, very much calculated or case proven where the offender, should they not take the leniency, gets the historic wrath of the crew when the ship shuts down all unnecessary lights at sea ("Lights Out").

This age old practice is barabaric by some; but, it is also an effective deterrent that brings results as well as being a terrific way to forgive offenders and retrieve stolen goods.

Bonnie and Clyde should be so lucky. I only hope you retrieve your possessions, Bryan.

Best of luck.

FSB

I believe it's in the same status unfortunately - the culprits were caught and identified but the gear itself has never (yet) resurfaced. :(

Thanks, for your update, Brad. Sorry to hear that things haven't improved in the search. We're all hoping things will change for the better and for Bryan.

Here's a goofy idea. Based on the thieves' information, the justice system could add a year for each missing axe to the basic penalties. When possible, they could reduce the sentences by a year above the basic penalties for each guitar returned when related to withheld information. Any axes located from other legitimate and initial sources would not apply, however. Maybe, this would give some incentive to open the doors to see better results. The same deal could apply to any individual knowingly involved after the initial crime. I know. Crazy idea. huh? Of course there are other less desirable methods.

I hate thieves! To me, it would seem like these guys had to have known what they were looking for at the Storage facility...unless more than just one unit was broken into (did not read links other than the original Facebook link provided).
I can understand a musician not wanting to travel with their favorite equipment (take chances on checking it in and morons tossing it around on plane's cargo holds)...but I have to wonder what he was gigging with in South America if not his "number one" bass?

Regardless...hope his gear is found and returned. Nothing more invasive (besides rape) than someone invading your private space, and stealing your beloved belongings.

There was an older country gentleman Pastor in Edmonton I used to know who had tons of vintage Fender gear along with some other brands as well. I believe he's passed on now. We saw each other infrequently but I first met him when I sold him a '94 Blues Deville he intended to use for his country gigs in town. He took me down to his basement and his collection rivalled that of Joe Bonamassa. Wall to wall guitars and amps with aisles like a music store filled the whole basement of a fairly good sized home. He told me the story of how he had a '52 Tele stolen from him during a load-out after a gig. The cops found the culprit but the best they could do in finding the guitar was trace it as far as Los Angeles where it was suspected to have boarded a yacht bound for Japan to be sold to collectors.

I don't expect this to apply here but I think it's an interesting story about gear theft and what may happen to the gear sometimes.
