For me Guild is the best quality versus value you can find. Every bit the equal of Martin and Gibson and half as expensive. Now I'm sorry Fender, but I'm talking about the Westerly, R.I. or Hackensack, NJ made Guilds. I don't have any experience with the newer american or chinese Guilds.

You can't beat a vintage Guild 12 string jumbo. No one makes em better then Guild did.

Yes, that's for real. I think it's a Linda Manzer. She is a fine luthier, and no, not all her guitars look like that-I think she called this one the 'Picasso'.

I actually prefer an old beater Ovation Custom Balladeer (Ovation is now owned by Fender). The molded bowl back is pretty much immune to climate changes, and it can take wear and tear. I've had solid wood acoustics that were unbelievably fussy depending on the humidity, Ovations to me are a lot more stable. Plus the sound is clear, loud and really projects!

If my house was on fire I'd grab my Gibson J-200 and then go back in for my wife...

but I agree- she needs to be the one to try lots of different guitars and choose the one that sings to her.

This is yet another one of these really opinionated questions. I've played some great sounding nylon string acoustics as well as steel stringers.

If you listen to some of the music made by Andrés Segovia and then some by Graham Nash or Willie Nelson, you'll hear that many different acoustic guitars "can" sound like the best.

I have a Taylor that I like a lot, but that's just my opinion. A friend and colleague likes Breedlove and Martins. The Gibson Hummingbird has been used on many recordings. I've played some of the Fender acoustics too and the Fender GDO-200 is one nice looking, sounding and playing guitar.

It's best to try and have her play as many as possible and then decide which ones she prefers best, then narrow it down. Good luck!

When I'm looking at acoustics, there are really two sounds I look for - Martin or Gibson.

Sometimes a Martin is a better fit, sometimes a Gibson is. It doesn't have to be that brand, but the sound they're known for.

In the $500 area, Martin has some nice guitars, and Epiphone's Masterbilt series is very nice.

If I lost all my guitars, and had to get one good acoustic for as cheap as I could get it, I'd probably get that Epi Hummingbird. Played a few and they're real nice for the money, well built, nice tone and pretty good.
