Or how about:

John McLaughlin?

Alan Holdsworth?

Al DiMeola?

Pat Metheny?

Any of them blow away just about every rock guitar player I've ever heard.

Remember, I said " just about every" .

This has been a very interesting thread - just seeing the difference in opinions and seeing the repeating names - however, I was kinda shocked to see Slash rated above SRV in one message - I realize everyone has their own opinion, but come on! LOL

My fav's are

1) Stevie Ray Vaughan
2) Buddy Guy
3) Paul Gilbert
4) Billy Gibbons
5) Bonnie Raiit

What about Nigel Tufnel?

Well well well... JH, EC, SRV etc etc... I would like to add that one of the best, and one of the most under-rated (especially on here by his absence), guitarists at the moment/ever has to be Prince. He can do pretty much anything he wants with a guitar... If you ever get the chance have a listen to his One Nite Alone Live Aftershow disc where he "transcends" from rock solos to the most funky rhythm playing... truly a fantastic guitarist. And then remember he can sing, play keys, drums etc etc etc....

http://www.3121.com/joy for a little glimpse...

Oh... and he's plays Fender guitars!

Well CS and I have kind of popped the silly balloon here. Pretty much any name jazz player can humiliate any name rock player in the universe at the game of playing the electric guitar with excellence and skills. Hands down. Wipe the floor with him. And eat his lunch afterwards. The difference is, they don't wear fake tatoos and shove zucchinis in their pants. Which around here apparently counts for a lot.

Case in point: Heavyweight Title Bout John "Copycat" Mayer vs. Kevin "Tonight Show" Eubanks

Knockout at :04 of the first round. Mayer would end up in the 5th row of the stands. His mouthpiece would still be airborne.

Bring em on. Knock em down one at a time. Not even a fair contest. They'd have to invoke the mercy rule after a while and stop the fights.

"John "Copycat" Mayer vs. Kevin "Tonight Show" Eubanks "

That's not a fair fight. Mayer is more a pop-blues guy, who can get better and I'll bet he does, while Eubanks is a jazz-blues guy. Jazz and the blues are very closely related. There's not a huge divide in terms of the scales and chords between jazz and the blues. BB King for example plays all the jazz chords from the 50s on including 9ths and 6ths and 13ths . . .

Personal list of greatest guitar players doesn't fit into 5:

1. Eric Clapton, but he's standing on BB's shoulders, and on the shoulders of the other Kings and Robert Johnson and others. Play classic 1950s BB and then play Eric and you'll see. Clapton from the Beatles to Cream to Derek to JJ Cale to live work that can't be touched to being an ambassodor for the blues to rearranging Crossroads Blues and re-writing it to bring in another song and make it electric, while giving all the credit to Robert Johnson. He's a tremendous musician and he's not appreciated due to a few albums in the 70s and mid 80s that weren't earth shattering and went kind of weak pop. Listen to Ridin' With The King and you hear two greats.
2. BB King for the writing and the playing and the inspiration
3. Stevie Ray Vaughn because he could play
4. Hendrix because he changed things
5. Jimmy Page for composition and recording
6. Jeff Beck for the innovation

I didn't read all of the posts in this thread so I don't know if he was mentioned; but supposedly, on a t alk show Jimi Hendrix was rumored to have said that Phil Keaggy was one of the best up-and-coming guitar players. Wether true or not, I don't know- but Phil's playing is pretty sweet. I couldn't honestly pick one or another as my vote for the "best"- there are too many awesome players out there. As far as a top 5 favorite rock guitarists, I would probably say

1. Eric Clapton
2. Brian May
3. Duane Allman
4. EVH
5. Carlos Santana

Phil Keaggy is a christian artist and does more contemporary pop than rock- he's good though. Youtube has quite a few videos of him.

I've got to add Santana to the list because his playing has a beautiful tone and unique voice. So that's 7.

I understand what you're saying and it's valid from a certain point of reference if you're talking about Foreigner and Def Leppard and such.

Consider blues rock fusion guitarists though. How about Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Santana and bring on Robert Cray and Buddy Guy too since they play Stratocasters against any jazz body you choose. One thing that's for sure, nobody will doze off when the bluesmen are playing.
