Me!!! (LOL.)

okay, there are other aspects of life that when something new comes up, people call it the best of all time? why must we musicians be so stubborn? seriously, if we did exactly what we are doing here, we would still be traveling around in horses and buggies, and other random crap like that... is it too much to ask for people to be a little open-minded?

i think we are open minded, i just dont think many artists have shown enough ability to be considered "one of the best".... synyster gates is a decent technical guitarist, but i personally don't find and type of shred appealing, it has no emotion, notes per minute don't really mean anything to me... the MCR guitarists are decent, i just don't like the band overall, but they aren't bad... there are a few modern guitarists who i think are great.... frusciante obviously, matt bellamy of muse is doing some really crazy things and making great riffs as is tom morello.... i just don't think the style of music many of them are playing is leading people to believe they are "better" than older artists because most of the music isnt generally as technical

just my thoughts though

All for being of open mind..if we make lists lets really do it right..choose a category and then list the best as generational best. I believe a lot of great artists have contributed to their style of music, but maybe earlier guitarists weren't shredders, etc...but helped create and were the roots that style of play...

An excellent point, VC! Especially considering that each new generation gets to leapfrog off the genius of all the previous ones.

like Jack White for instance... he's awesome... and his style of music is DEFINATELY different... he's influenced a lot of people my age(18) to dare to do something other than just a few fancy pick slides here and there...

What we put in our list of who we think is our best. I think whats cool about this thread is you can look through it and if you have never heard of someone we can look them up and give them a chance. I dont think its fair to call us closed minded because we dont think what another person likes should be considered one of the best of all time. Everyone has their own taste.

I thought this was "5 Greatest Guitar Players of All Time" not "5 Silliest Posers in Leather Pants"! Obviously no one is taking the topic seriously, or they'd be compelled to list:

1. Charlie Christian

2. Django Reinhardt

3. Tal Farlow

4. Wes Montgomery

5. Jim Hall

Right after them are hundreds of close calls like George Benson, Grant Green, Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd, etc etc etc. Most of the guys in the previous posts range from 749th to 8 milliionth in the actual list. In fact, I come in ahead of a couple of em!

But let's face it, this is not really a list of the "5 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." It's a popularity contest about who sold the most records since 1965 and who looked the coolest while they ran scales as fast as they could through banks of distortion devices. Now that would be an honest premise for a list!

Isn't this your list?

C"mon, Maruuk... saying that people aren't taking it seriously just because their tastes run counter to your own really isn't fair.

Besides, you missed Joe Pass. :D

Point being, or course there's no such thing as the 5 or 10 or 20 or 759 or 12,352 greatest players ever, just as there no One Greatest Ever.

Heck, my list included Oz Noy, and I'll bet most players have never even heard of him.
