okay, here are my picks:

5. This guy named Corey that plays with Marc Broussard.
4.Eddie Van Halen (That should be obvious)
3. Brian May (Queen)
2.Ray Toro (My Chemical Romance)
1.Synyster Gates (Avenged Sevenfold)

Note: about #5, if you happen to have direcTV, check out the 101 and look for the Marc Broussard. Corey's on there.

i have 7 i want to share, so deal with it :P

7. Matthew Bellamy - just watch his playing... makes so many memorable riffs you'll play over and over with some extreme effects
6. Tom Morello - for originality and contribution to music
5. Stevie Ray Vaughn - great all around player
4. Slash - great all around player, cool riffs, fun to listen to
3. Jimi Hendrix - great player, did something original and revolutionized the guitar, but if you look at some of his music, its not too complicated, but it soudns great, not a #1 for me though
2. Jimmy Page - same thiing as Hendrix, great player but not my #1
1. Eric Clapton - i love claptons music, although he may not be the most technical in some songs, he gets the point across with his tone and wonderful riffs that people remember

the top 3 were so hard, all are great and it depends on the situation to some degree, i love all 3 of thei playing though

doesn't anybody think it's possible that one of the new guys (i.e. Synyster Gates/ Ray Toro) could top a classic like Hendrix? i think it is... just listen to the solo on Seize the Day by A7X

i don't think hendrix is the greatest play ever... he was original in the time, but he wasn't this great, super technical genious everyone claims.... i don't think any of the newer atrists top him though... some are coming close, but guitarists today don't seem to play with much emotion, the do more sweep picking and such and try to play faster which doesn't sound as good to me as the feel and emotion of hendrix
