That depends on whether they're new or used.

The first guitar I ever bought was a used '79 Gibson SG Standard which I bought from (neighbor) Mike Varney who needed cash to start up Shrapnel Records circa 1982 or so. Varney was the one who first discovered Yngwei, Tony MacAlpine, and many, many other guitar shredders. That SG was a great purchase for sure. But in general, I find that the real "great deals" are only for questionable instruments ... hence, I prefer paying a little more to get new and no "questionable background". That being said, for the aggressive used-guitar shopper, there are definitely deals out there. And, yes, after Varney's significant success, he wanted to buy my SG back. Ummm, no ... I still own it.

I had great luck buying used guitars from eBay sellers. My two favorite guitars came from there. My last win was a 3-color Stratocaster XII that arrived in mint condition. There weren't even any pick marks on the p/g. It was as if it had stayed in the gig bag and had never been played.

I bought a few stomp boxes too. I did get burned once. I should have asked for a "No Cooties" guarantee.

My Strat XII in LPB purchased on Ebay came the same way -- packed in its original Fender shipping carton, all hang tags and paperwork present, not a mark on the instrument. Virtually brand new. But without the $350 premium than an "unused" instrument would've carried.
