over the past few years, I have found some good deals on used gear. my recent purchase of a very nice Hendrix strat was just a bit over half the price of a new one. the plastic is still on, and the paperwork in the gig bag was still sealed. I also purchased a honeyburst nitro strat, an allen accomplice amp, and a carvin v3mc combo at great savings over new. none were ebay chances-all were bought from reverb, music-go-round, and guitar center, so I didn't worry about getting taken.

by doing this, I find I can afford more gear. I now have a nice set of guitars and amps, at a price that doesn't make my spouse mad or put me in the poor house.

does anybody else shop the same way, or do you prefer shiny new gear?

I will buy used gear but only if I can make a face-to-face local deal.
I have a wariness of buying used gear at a distance.
I have never been ripped off before but I've had so many heebie jeebie conversations with sellers that I have begun to approach used gear at a distance with a whole lot of caution.
I imagine the number of threads on the various guitar forums that I visit pertaining to fakes and rip-offs hasn't helped my peace of mind much.

Mostly, I buy new gear from well known vendors.
Of course, I don't have a wife to answer to.

Buying used is fine, but you have to go through ten bad ones for every good one you find.
People misrepresent and outright lie in a way that no store can get away with, so I much prefer to buy used gear from stores.

One of the two guitars I play the most, a white Telecaster Standard, was bought used for $250 in excellent condition. At that price, I don't worry so much about it as I do my $2000 Tele, so I play it more, and harder.

For amps, I almost prefer buying used. Same caveat emptor applies - there are a lot of bad ones for every good one, so you have to be ready to walk away with "no sale" most of the time. But the thing about amps is that any decent new ones are very expensive. You can find a good new guitar for $500, but honestly, you cannot get a good new amp for that price, so going through the used market can be worth it. IMHO, YMMV.

I'm with you, P-Bee......there are too many bargains around to ignore. I've bought a few new guitars over the years and been quite happy with them but the ones I seem most gratified to own are those that I've built from used parts and bits.

As for amps, strictly used. There isn't anything new that I'd ever consider forking over a single farthing for. They're just utter junk.

I typically prefer to buy new, unless it was something special to me that you can no longer get new, because it's no longer made, like my Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-550 Mark II drum machine. Also, I've gotten really good deals with so called scratch and dents and open box items, or non factory sealed items. The things I got the only thing wrong with them was the box was beat up and I saved a lot of money.

Even though my minimal gear was bought all new, I'd love to have some used gear from some celebrities; although, a lot of the well used road gear is just that . . . well used.

Because
1) There's always a reason why it is being sold.
1b) And sellers lie about it.
2) Wear and tear.
3) (Depending on where you live) Lack of warranty.
4) Cooties.

I have never bought a new amp and they were always mint. Sold everyone at a profit and kept the ones I liked. There is so much used gear that is bought and never used by the original purchasers, how did you get cooties?

I bought my Hendrix strat for 400 bucks less than a new one cost. it looks like its' never been played. I played it for an hour before I bought it, making sure everything was ok. great guitar!

that being said, I would not buy used from a source I am not familiar with. if I can't be sure any problems would be taken care of, I will pass.

So it is safe to say, you wouldn't buy a guitar from someone with cooties.

For guitars I have bought both new and used. When it comes to guitars it only comes home with me (new or used) if it talks to me. I have bought from many sources, CL, GC, Mom and Pop Shops, and even done trades but I just wouldn't buy from a guitar from an on-line dealer. I got to play the guitar, but can understand how some may not have the access I do.

For amps I have only ever bought one amp new, my '84 Fender Concert and it has served me extremely well over the years since, but it was also one of the last built vintage style. All other amps I own were bought used, some with the intent of refurbing. I have a Mom and Pop place here that seems to score some great project level vintage amps and they always channel to me. Some of those builds I have posted in the vintage amp section as projects. For some reason the amps are much more fun to me to rebuild than guitars, I just can't explain that!

New or used, no vs.
Depends on the time place and need.

ps: do not purchase gear from anyone with cooties or anyone wearing depends.
