I play Scrabble online and two of my regular opponents are from Texas and in recent conversations on the side, they both left me thinking Boxing Day was a Canadian-only tradition. Now that I see an American speaking of it, I wonder if the traditional activities of this day are the same on both sides of the 49th. In my world, Christmas Day is for family and Boxing Day is for friends. We do something similar to a pub crawl but it's a house crawl. We go to a friend's house for a drink, usually in the afternoon and then go to another friend's house for a drink and so on. Best to take a cab if you plan to crawl all day. Often someone will have a party in the evening. I know of nobody who goes hunting fox.

That said, speaking of fox, I recall that in my youth if you saw a fox it was because the fox made a mistake and you caught it by surprise. The past 10 years or so I see fox all the time. Many are almost tame. I opened the back door once and found a fox balancing up on the edges of my garbage can reaching down to scavenge. It looked up at me for a moment, about 8 feet away, and seeing I wasn't approaching or threatening, it went back to it's business. The fox here are mostly the red fox variety.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Matt, here is a wiki link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day

I was lucky and stationed in England for 2 Christmas's. 1972 and 1973. We went to friends homes as well as pubs on Boxing Day (a bank holiday). Great fun with family and friends. As for fox hunting I was not ever invited which is probably a good thing because I would much rather ride a Mustang Cobra than a hairy animal lol. :D

This year Boxing Day was a chance to catch out breath & just relax at home & didn't have to get dressed to go out type of day.
Some sales out there--but they are on until the weekend and there's nothing I'm absolutely sold on buying--so I'll wait.

As most everyone here knows I am here in Vancouver where my mother will soon take possession of a new retirement apartment.

Thanks, to Boxing Day we got new furnishings (a bed, end table, dinette table and chairs), a TV, and a microwave - all on sale. :D

Looking around her old apartment and the stuff to move (or get rid of) I can see why they call it Boxing Day.
