I just got done jamming with some friends. This is the first time we have jammed, and believe it or not, it is the first time I have jammed as a guitar player. Now the two guys I was jamming with have played for over 25 to 30 years.

I was a drummer until February. I started playing and this was the first time I actually played songs with someone else. It was just the shot in the arm I needed. I was fully engaged just trying to keep up with these guys. I am really motivated to keep playing now.

I was kind of in a slump. Playing chords and working on my chord progressions. Feeling like I was in a repetitive rut, which I was. But now, I have to practice about 12 different songs. And it is going to be a regular Tuesday night thing.

So take it from me, if you find yourself in a slump, play with a friend or two. It doesn't matter the level of playing, just play. I can already tell I am a better player by just playing with these guys!

I noticed the same thing when I started playing with my band but then my band broke up. Back in the rut :?

Agreed.
I become so bored playing by myself, but when I'm playing with others, I am having a blast, being creative, and feel that I'm getting somewhere.

you will never get a better lesson than playing live or jamming with other musicians. Try and diversify too, dont just stick to guitar bass and drums. Get some brass, keyboard or violin players around you too. Their outlook on music is very different to the average guitarist and will influence you greatly if you let it.

Recently I had a Jack Black moment jamming out to Wild Thing with a 12 and ten year old. I'm teaching them bass and guitar (the 12 year old is a drummer) and they are both pretty good.

That is really sage advice! Thanks! I will do that!

This post is timely. I just got my wife interested in playing. She learning rather quickly probably because of her experince with the violin for many many years (That second many will probably get me in trouble) Since she has been practicing with me the time flies and I have a lot more fun. She says that it helps in keeping her interested as well not something she would have done on her own. I think the colaboration and sometimes competition makes all the practice time a lot more valuable and interesting.

You can learn a lot from other guitar players. And they from you, especially when you get together to have a jam session.
