Hi All
I am new to the forum and hope someone can be of help. I have a Mexican Strat, Serial No MN6121398 and am hoping someone can shed some light on the origins of this beast. I have been told by a so called guitar expert that this is in fact a cheap strat put together from Squire parts at the Mexico factory. Fact, fiction or sour grapes. Any help would be appreciated. I look forward to any reply. Keep dem fenders bending. Moosey.

I just picked one up with #MN5204765 and I had a heck of time deciphering the date of manufacture.... :x

How in the world someone would know that it's a cheap assembly knockoff is beyond me. Sounds as if someone might be jealous? I really don't know.

I mean my Squier Standard stays in tune and plays just as smooth as my MIM strat. And I've had my share of people scoff at the idea of a Squier being played at all...

It's whatever floats your boat IMO, if you like the guitar, you win. :D

Thanx for confirming that, that's the year that I came up with but wasn't sure if I was right. 8)

There are difference btw the american and mexican models, and most owners of just the MIM will argue that they don't matter, etc.

But MIM guitars are great in their own right, and a great value for the money. I've seen Ike Willis - Frank Zappa's right hand man - play in bands and he usually uses a MIM. Now he can play pretty much anything he wants, and he's a fantastic guitar player, and he chooses a MIM.

I have both - MIA and MIM. While I can certainly tell the difference, and appreciate that MIA better, the MIM is great and I still love it for what it is.

With a good MIM, you'll never NEED another strat, although after a while, you may WANT the upgrades that the MIA has. Like deciding to go for the leather seats when you don't really "need" them :)

That "expert" was a moron. I have a MIM Strat and I love it! Besides, aren't Squires (for the most part) made in Indonesia? Maybe I'm wrong about that.

mines mn586840 and has a regular fender logo with the mexican serial no' underneath and squire series where fender usa say contour body. Its a pants wettingly good guitar better than my american 57 hotrod and anything else i've played in the last 11 years. ive been told its a squire it was set up to absolute perfection by me over the course of its time on earth, until i stripped it last week to redecorate. Still im confident i can rebuild it. so much so i sold my suhr s2 instead of get rid of my squi-der as i call it. They seem in short supply or unmentioned. Did yours have the low E nearly slipping off the board? that seemed to be the common fault with them.

I've picked up a 96-97 MIM Squire Series a few months ago too. Black fender logo with MN serial #. Black body of basswood or poplar, one of those white woods, pretty light, big difference from my alder body strat. Great feeling maple neck. Tuner sucked, I replaced with vintage, had to drill headstock some. I'll replace the bridge with a vintage one as soon as strings go bad, saddles suck too. This one has 3 ply pickguard instead of single and the best surprise was to see MIA pickups once I opened it. I knew it sounded good. Was a great buy for less than $200.

Another partocaster made by Fender made out of mixed MIM and MIA parts.

The concept of self-declared 'experts' with strong opinions of what constitutes 'sub-standard' or 'sucky' in somebody else's instrument is personally akin in joy to the concept of a festering ingrown hair on one's bum.

'Have an MIM 50s Stratocaster, MIM Buddy Guy Polka Dot Strat and an American Standard...and all are pro-set up and all are great playing, sounding, high quality guitars in their own right.

I agree. I have both MIM and American, and I can tell the difference. I still like my MIM, and use it lot for practicing, and consider it a workhouse.

Crikey!! this moron really has stirred up one hell of a can of worms. Wait till I show him this little lot. Anyway to put things into context my little beauty is fiesta red with a rosewood fret, trem and on the headstock has good old Fender Stratocaster (nothing else) with the serial number underneath. If i didn't love her so much he could end up wearing her as a scarf. Rock On.
