Hey Redmax61, welcome to the forum. Your cake pan amp looks awesome. I see you're running JJ preamp tubes in that badboy, nice!

If your amp sounds great clean, why mess with it? A good clean amp is worth it's weight in lasagna. However, I find it extremely difficult to make a clean amp sound good dirty. IMHO, your best bet would be to invest in a second amp that was made to have a little grit to it, then push it over the edge with a little clean drive. That'll get you much closer to the tone you're looking for.

How dare you! Nothing's worth it's weight in lasagna! :x

Excellent work on the amp! Next up: the stovetop half stack?

I'd have to agree. Lasagna is far too important to be used in such a frivolous reference. I make a 7 lb lasagna that takes many hours to prepare. It's a religious experience.

can you tell us a little about the design of this amp, please?
How many watts, stages of pre-amp, class, etc, whatever seems important?

thanks.

Sure!

The amp is called a Firefly, and it was designed by Doug Hammond a few years ago. I basically took his design and tweaked it to my liking.

It's a 1/2 watt self-splitting/self-inverting push pull design. In other words, there is no PI stage. It has either 2 (Clean mode) or 3 (Mean mode) gain stages. The first stage belongs to the mean mode, and can be switched out of the circuit for the clean mode. The 2nd and 3rd preamp stages are straight ahead common cathode stages. It seems that nobody over at AX84 can agree as to what class this amp operates in, but everybody agrees that it doesn't matter a bit cause the amp rocks!

You can get more information on the Firefly at AX84.com.

Best sounding cake pan I've heard.

Chet, your brother sounds a lot like my dad almost, always trying to make something strange, yet cool. Not that thats a bad thing, don't get me wrong. My dad can make some pretty cool stuff sometimes when he puts his mind to it.

I'm pretty anxious to get it. I'm still waiting for the 1x12 cab I am borrowing to get here too.

He is pretty busy most of the time.

I actually check in quite a bit. I just don't have anything intelligent to say, so I avoid putting my size 12 Chucks in my mouth.

He is 5 years younger than I. Yes, he has taught me quite a bit and I'm still learning stuff from him. I don't know if I have ever taught him anything other than what not to do. :?
