I went and bought my son a used Gibby335 for his Birthday and he was happy. Well the following day his girlfriend comes to me and said she would like to get him another guitar because she wanted to give him a gift that makes him Quote go GAGA. You ready for this I said how much money you have she says 150 can I get some from you and pay you back over time. I am like what, and moms looking at me like go ahead so we went to the guitar store and she is showing me guitars that they looked at 12 13 14 hundred I am like I dont think so not after what I just gave him. I got to thinking he has 2 Strats, 1 Lp now a 335 but he always grabs up my Tele so I asked the sale person for a MIM wine color Tele maple neck they had two so I told his girlfriend give me your money and I will pay the rest and you can give him this and you dont have to pay me back. She says do you think he will like this and I said trust me. So he also got a new Tele for his birthday and I am out the money I was saving for a Fender Super Champ XD. The things we do for our kids. Thats what Dads are for and its a Great Job to have!

Good on you.

'Have poured a bunch into 3 daughters, who are now all U grads and doing fine.

And sometimes thought, while doing something like you mentioned, kind of above and beyond the call of parental duty...

...better to buy her a MIM Strat...

...than a couple of hours of lawyer's fees.

In this opinion tho, you should let the GF pay you for the balance. Good for 'responsibility.' Peace, Bro.

I thought about that but she has had kind of a tough time since her parents seperated and she had to move out for the first time. She had to move in with a women from work because a one bedroom place around here cost about 1200 as month and these young kids have it tough now days.We are thinking she be living here soon so I told my son 19 and girlfriend 23 they will be kicking in some on bills. And we will help her with her last year of school with what we can . Thats the kind of parents we are because I see young adults who dont get support and it just hurts me so we do what we can.

The importance of parental involvement in your children's life can't be expressed enough! Great job and very magnanimous of you! A shining example! You should be proud of yourself! I know that your son is!

My son is kind of the oddball. I asked him if he wanted another guitar now that he has a Strat and he answered "maybe in the future, but not right now." I let him use my Variax so he can try the different guitar sounds and he seems perfectly content to use his MIM fat strat. Good boy!

I think that once a couple of basic niches for guitars are filled, then it's important to work on other niches, like a really good amp, something to record with, good instructional material and/or lessons.

One thing I did do for my son that went over very well was stopping in Nashville as part of a roadtrip to go fishing. We had to pass through the music city anyway, so I got the maps to some guitar shops etc. He really liked that. It's quite a place, and for somebody as into music as he is, it's almost like a pilgrimage.

Don`t feel bad, you did the right thing in the long run. He`s got enough guitars to keep him busy for awhile and that should keep him out of trouble. I waited my whole life to get a Strat and now that I`m 59 I got a new `08 American Standard in the beginning of this year. Between my job and raising kids the time wasn`t right until now. As parents this is what we do, the kids comes first. And until their on their own and self supportive, we empty our wallets for them so they can have the things that we didn`t have.

Got my first Fender strat at age 44, my son got his first Fender at age 6 (Squier Mini). I love watching him learn to play it.
My 3rd is due early September, so i figure the mini gets handed down and I best get shares in Fender or become a rock God and get me my own signature model so I get some free ones. lol (':D')

That was a great one there Dad!!

My childhood was pretty un-Norman Rockwell, not abuse or anything but my parents are just very selfish people, it was all for them. So in return I really try to be part of my kids' lives.

What makes me sad? None of my 3 kids have any interest in playing an instrument, we have 5 guitars, one ukelele and one piano in our house and no one but me plays any of them. Granted I would like them to ask before playing any of my guitars, but if they really showed some interest I would drive them to the music store faster than they could imagine.

What are you gonna do, at this point they still like hanging out with me which is pretty cool. 8)

That is real cool that your kids want to
hang out with you... Now-a-days some
kids don't even want to be seen with
their parents...

I don't have any kids,,, at times I wish
I did...

You're a lucky Dad...

cvilleira I know how you feel. I've done things for my kids that I wouldn't
do for myself. And now its the grandkids. By the way you wouldn't be in
the market to adopt. I'm sort of on the used side but housebroken and
I have a birthday coming up and could use a 335 and a Tele.
